Temmesläinen Lauri Honka vietti parhaat nuoruusvuotensa sotahommis-sa. 18-vuotiaana suojeluskuntapoikana hän aloitti talvisodan Limingassa siltavartijana. Viisi vuotta myöhemmin vuoden 1944 marraskuussa hänet kotiutettiin 23-vuotiaana ilmavoimien luutnanttina ja kolmen sodan veteraanina. Lauri Honka teki jo talvisodan aikana muistiinpanoja ja vuoden 1942 alusta lähtien hän piti tarkkaa päiväkirjaa. Päiväkirjojen lisäksi hän kir-joitti sota-ajastaan myöhemmin erillisiä tarinoita, joita on tässä kirjassa liitetty päiväkirjojen lomaan aikajärjestyksessä. Mukana on myös pieni osa Laurin saamasta ja lähettämästä kenttäpostista. Lauri Honka voitti tällä aineistolla Suomalaisen kirjallisuuden seuran ja Sota-arkiston järjestämän sotakirjeiden keruukilpailun vuonna 1994. Nyt materiaali on julkaistu, ja Lauri Hongan muistiinpanoista syntyi yhtenäinen nuoren miehen kertomus viime sotiemme ajalta. Päiväkirjojen tekstiä on tarkennettu ja kommentoitu alaviitteillä. Kirjassa on myös erillisiä katsauksia sotatilanteen etenemisestä, jotta Lauri Hongan sotavaellus olisi helpompi sijoittaa suurempaan viitekehykseen. Kirjassa on runsas henkilökohtainen kuvitus. "Tarinat alkavat itsestäkin tuntua uskomattomilta. Etenkin noilla lentä-villä ruumisarkuilla lentäminen oli melkoinen kokemus. Pääasia oli, että annetut tehtävät täytettiin niin hyvin kuin kulloinkin voitiin, ja vakavia-kaan vaiheita ei väistetty. Ilo otettiin irti silloin, kun se oli saatavissa. Olimme silloin nuoria ja elimme nuorten lailla aina, kun siihen oli mah-dollisuuksia. Tämän muistakoon jokainen, joka näitä muisteluksiani lukee. Ikäpolvemme nuoruuteen kuului SOTA. Elämä sotareissullani oli ajoittain värikästä ja ainakin vaihtelevaa."

This volume looks at the Finnish-German military alliance (1941–1944) as a translation zone – a multilingual network of military, administrative and civilian encounters that was held together by linguistically versed soldiers and civilians acting as interpreters and translators. It focuses on interpreters and liaison officers of the Finnish Liaison Staff in Rovaniemi, who were assigned to the staffs of the German army units with the task of maintaining communication between the two armies and assisting German troops in their daily matters. Furthermore, attention is paid to Finnish civilians, especially women whose language skills made them candidates for a range of mediation tasks in the German units. The reconstruction of military interpreters’ and liaison officers’ tasks and mediation agency between the two military cultures is based on their war-time weekly reports, whereas the civilian interpreters’ experiences are drawn from a variety of autobiographical accounts, including interviews.
