Soul Physicians provides a relevant, in-depth theology of biblical counseling. Just as medical students examine the anatomy of the human body, so soul physicians need to understand the anatomy of the human soul. Soul Physicians offers a theological foundation for the ministry of biblical counseling, soul care, and spiritual direction, equipping the counselor to make Christian counseling truly Christian.

Over one hundred years ago, D. L. Moody urged the church to return to the training of "soul physicians." These are men and women who have learned to lean upon the Holy Spirit in both diagnosing the condition of the soul and in aiding others to experience the blessing that can be found in the Lord Jesus Christ. True ministry flows from the inward person (John 7:37-39) and genuine growth involves strengthening of our spirits (Luke 1:80; Eph. 3:16). This book is designed to allow God to do a work in you that He may freely work through you. it is aimed at equipping you to meet the spiritual needs of others and to shepherd, exhort, and guide God's people. Training people to be soul physicians involves obeying Paul's instruction to Timothy to first "pay close attention to yourself and your teaching," which results not only in one's own sanctification but also in becoming a living epistle and overflowing to others in fulfilling the Great commission. I have written this book to enable you to abound in the work of the Lord as you experience the grace of prayer. As God liberates and frees you, you will also be equipped to overflow and aid others by pointing them to Christ--the only One who can meet the deepest longings of a soul. The truths of this book are very precious to me. If you were to offer millions of dollars in exchange for the experience of Christ's acceptance, authority, motivation and enablement, and continual cleansing, I would not be even tempted to entertain the offer. God graciously offers His loving aid in everyone's battle with anger, guilt, and fear. You can be "more than a conqueror" in these battles and experience the wonderful gift that Jesus called "rest for your soul."

To what extent should spiritual information be part of a patient’s medical assessment? How should physicians respond when patients refuse life-saving care on religious grounds? Should doctors pray with their patients? Questions such as these raise deeper ones about the goals of medicine and the nature of healing. In a set of engaging and candid essays, The Soul of Medicine explores the role and influence of spirituality in clinical practice, professionalism, and medical education. The contributors to this volume approach this topic from their own spiritual perspectives—Jewish, Christian, Muslim, Buddhist, Hindu, New Age / Eclectic, secular, Jehovah’s Witnesses, and Christian Scientist. Their thought-provoking essays provide rich insights not only into the needs of patients with various world views but also into how spirituality influences the practice of medicine. When their own spiritual issues arise in medical practice, physicians rely on their professionalism, ethics, and education. To better understand how various world views are incorporated into clinical work, doctors must ask themselves—as these contributors have—a series of important questions: What insights about life and healing does your faith provide? How does your faith challenge or reinforce contemporary medicine? How do you assess and address spirituality in clinical practice? How do your own beliefs influence your interactions with patients? The Soul of Medicine encourages medical students and practitioners to recognize the spiritual dimensions of medicine, to consider how these dimensions inform their own education and practice, and to be compassionate about their patients’—and their own—religious beliefs.

Entering medicine was not something I contemplated from the beginning. I wanted to be a scientist... until I became disillusioned with that enterprise. Currently I’m a physician executive recently retired. Following medical school, I trained in Internal Medicine and Emergency Medicine. It’s the latter that I practiced clinically. Through an exploration of great thinkers and philosophers, coupled with my own interactions with patients and colleagues, I’ve come to understand that medicine is a social, moral, philosophical, and existential enterprise, of which science is only one aspect.

Few experiences stir the emotions and throw a person into crisis as illness does. If affects not only the body but also the spirit and soul. Illness is about life and death, fear and hope, love and conflict, spirit and body. And yet, the healthcare system is not structured around these considerations—our doctors and other medical professionals are not trained to deal with the whole person. Care of the Soul In Medicine is Moore’s manifesto about the future of healthcare. In this new vision of care, Moore speaks to the importance of healing a person rather than simply treating a body. He gives advice to both healthcare providers and patients for maintaining dignity and humanity. He provides spiritual guidance for dealing with feelings of mortality and threat, encouraging patients to not only take an active part in healing but also to view illness as a positive passage to new awareness. While we don’t fully understand the extent to which healing depends on attitude; it has been shown that healing needs to focus on more than the body. The future of medicine is not only in new technical developments and research discoveries; it is also in appreciating the state of soul and spirit in illness.

Now that the therapeutic movement within the churches has disentangled the facts of experience from the shallow metaphysics of Mrs. Eddy, it is useful to hear a fresh discussion of the matter from a man of independent position. Mr. Dresser outlines the ideal occupation of a physician of the soul in a manner which suggests the philosophic house chaplain of the Roman Stoic circles, and "he illustrates the counsel which such a moral physician would give. A valuable chapter on the Power of the Spirit attempts to show the right adjustment of religious faith and experience Viewed with scientific precision, and the reviewer notes conclusions which seem like a fresh statement of Chaning's leading idea. At the close of the book a "true" Christian Science is expounded on the basis of the preaching of Jesus, but it is quite plain that Mr. Dresser reads the gospels in the light of his modern idea. -Unity, Vol. 61 [1908]The purpose of the new volume, "A Physician to the Soul," by Dr. Horatio W. Dresser, the author of "Living by the Spirit," and other books on the inner life, is to apply the idealism of the previous volumes to individual problems. A portion of the book is devoted to the principles which underlie the work of adaptation to individual needs, and is especially meant for teachers, ministers, and others who wish to become physicians to the soul. The remainder of the book is addressed to those who have personal problems to solve. In the form of letters to various people needing help, Dr. Dresser expounds practical methods of thought in a very personal, immediate sort of way. These modes of thought arc intended to indicate the next step beyond mental healing as commonly practiced. Particularly timely is a discussion of the new experiment known as the "Emmanuel Movement," also an essay entitled "The True Christian Science." -The Pacific Unitarian, Vol. 16 [1907]

In these pages a twofold purpose has been achieved, the restatement of the methods and laws of an ideal occupation in terms of living issues, and the inculcation of principles of self-help closely allied with this ideal. Chapters I, VII, and VIII are especially meant for those who would become physicians to the soul, the others more particularly for those who are seeking light on personal problems. The book was written in response to a number of requests hone of which I saw fit to meet precisely as stated. These requests in substance called for critical estimates of various theories of mental healing. Critical estimates are apt to be unpleasantly decisive, and it did not seem worthwhile to return to a field which I left several years ago. Moreover, the therapeutic movement within the church has suddenly put the situation in a new light. Hence it seemed more profitable to indicate what I believe to be the next advance, a step in accord with recent investigations in new fields. Finally, I have responded to a request for a refutation of "Christian Science" by writing an essay on the science of the Gospels. The book as a whole, then, is constructive, and it points the way to lines of work which may almost wholly supersede methods now in vogue.CAMBRIDGE, MASS, July 1908
