Men And Angels written by Willis Knapp Jones and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1970 with Drama categories.

Willis Knapp Jones, a noted translator and specialist in Latin-American theatre, has chosen these three comedies as examples of the flowering of truly national theatre in Paraguay, Chile, and Argentina: The Fate of Chipi' González, by José Maria Rivarola Matto; Man of the Century, by Miguel Frank; and The Quack Doctor, by Camilo Darthés and Carlos Damel. As the title under which the three plays are collected suggests, the plays reflect a unique if irreverent combination of fact and fantasy. Yet, as the reader will perceive, underlying this fantasy and love of the quixotic are themes of intrinsic universal appeal, the mark of creative genius in any language. The Fate of Chipí González, set in rural Paraguay, pits the Angel Saul and the devil mom in a struggle for the soul of Chipí, an illiterate football champion. But Chipí escapes them all--the football team, the devil, and the angel. Man of the Century features fast-moving, hilarious situations created by Angel XM26 when he is sent to check up on a middle-class Chilean family in preparation for the Last Judgement. Angel XM26, clad in wings of waterproof nylon designed by Dior, proves unequal to his task, and all Heaven and Hell ring with the problems thus created. The Quack Doctor, a simple and delightful comedy, explores the folkways in an Argentine village, where a woman doctor, unable to win acceptance in a society which refuses to approve of a woman trained as a physician, meets her patients at their own superstitious level. A Contemporary Latin American Classics series book, edited by J. Cary Davis, Professor of Spanish at Southern Illinois University.

This new translation of Ángel Cappelletti's wide-ranging, country-by-country historical overview of anarchism's social and political achievements in fourteen Latin American nations is the first book-length regional history ever published in English. With a foreword by the translator. Ángel J. Cappelletti (1927–1995) was an Argentinian philosopher who taught at Simon Bolivar University in Venezuela. He is the author of over forty works primarily investigating philosophy and anarchism. The South American Camelids written by Duccio Bonavia and has been published by Cotsen Institute of Archaeology Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2009-02-01 with Science categories.

One of the most significant differences between the New World's major areas of high culture is that Mesoamerica had no beasts of burden and wool, while the Andes had both. Four members of the camelid family--wild guanacos and vicunas, and domestic llamas and alpacas--were native to the Andes. South American peoples relied on these animals for meat and wool, and as beasts of burden to transport goods all over the Andes. In this book, Duccio Bonavia tackles major questions about these camelids, from their domestication to their distribution at the time of the Spanish conquest. One of Bonavia's hypotheses is that the arrival of the Europeans and their introduced Old World animals forced the Andean camelids away from the Pacific coast, creating the (mistaken) impression that camelids were exclusively high-altitude animals. Bonavia also addresses the diseases of camelids and their population density, suggesting that the original camelid populations suffered from a different type of mange than that introduced by the Europeans. This new mange, he believes, was one of the causes behind the great morbidity of camelids in Colonial times. In terms of domestication, while Bonavia believes that the major centers must have been the puna zone intermediate zones, he adds that the process should not be seen as restricted to a single environmental zone. Bonavia's landmark study of the South American camelids is now available for the first time in English. This new edition features an updated analysis and comprehensive bibliography. In the Spanish edition of this book, Bonavia lamented the fact that the zooarchaeological data from R. S. MacNeish's Ayacucho Project had yet to be published. In response, the Ayacucho's Project's faunal analysts, Elizabeth S. Wing and Kent V. Flannery, have added appendices on the Ayacucho results to this English edition. This book will be of broad interest to archaeologists, zoologists, social anthropologists, ethnohistorians, and a wide range of students.

The fourth-largest continent on earth, South America is a land of great extremes. The longest mountain range on the planet--the Andes--divides the continent from its northern coast on the sunny Caribbean to its southern tip at stormy Tierra del Fuego. Within its boundaries lies the world's highest active volcano (Chimborazo, in Ecuador), the world's highest waterfall (Angel Falls, in Venezuela), and the world's driest region (the Atacama Desert, of Chile). South America's chief river, the 3,900-mile-long (6,276-km-long) Amazon, and its more than 1,000 tributaries flow from the world's largest drainage basin, which is home to countless animal and plant species. More than 386 million people of many different cultures and races live in South America's 12 independent nations and three dependencies. Some are descendants of the land's native Indians, such as the Incas; others carry on the customs and traditions of their European ancestors, especially the Spanish and Portuguese who centuries ago colonized the region. Although wars, political instability, and violence in many South American countries have taken their toll on the economy, leaving millions in poverty, the abundant resources of the continent continue to be developed, producing food and other items sold throughout the world. There's a lot to discover about South America! Each title in this series contains color photos, maps, a chronology of events related to the country, recipes, list of festivals, ideas for projects and reports, and back matter including: an index, further reading lists for books and internet resources, and a series glossary.
