Interocean and interbasin exchanges occur at choke points of relatively limited extent and so provide natural geographic constraints for observing the variability of the global circulation. However, the complex bathymetry of interconnected straits and sills at these choke points and the many unique dynamical processes associated with interocean and interbasin exchanges provide challenges for observations and models alike. While overall the exchanges tend to reduce property gradients between and within ocean basins and marginal seas, they may also introduce contrasting thermohaline fluxes that can potentially influence the strength and stability of the meridional overturning circulation. In this chapter, the present knowledge of interocean exchange through the high-latitude Drake Passage and Agulhas system in the Southern Ocean and the low-latitude Indonesian seas is discussed. Examples of interbasin exchange from marginal seas illustrate their importance as source regions for the forcing of the circulation, or as regions where water masses are formed that modify and mark the variability in the global climate system. Finally, deep passage overflows that permit the exchange of deep and bottom waters between neighboring ocean basins, their characteristics and dynamics are reviewed.

The book presents results of recent projects in oceanography and marine geosciences (e.g. WOCE, JGOFS, PAGES, ODP) regarding present and past circulation in the South Atlantic. The objective of the book is to integrate results from both oceanographic and geological studies. As the connecting link between the Antarctic and the North Atlantic, the South Atlantic plays a crucial role with regard to the heat budget of the North Atlantic and to the biogeochemical budget of the global ocean. New results from studies of meridional water mass and heat transports are presented. The central theme of geological investigations is the reconstruction of current and productivity systems in the South Atlantic during the late Quaternary.

Recent results from modeling and observational studies demonstrate that the tropical Atlantic is a critical region for processes that maintain the meridional overturning circulation, such as cross-equatorial exchanges, and for sea surface temperature variability that impacts on climate variability of the coupled tropical ocean/atmosphere system. The theme of this book is the inter-hemispheric and inter-gyre exchanges of heat, salt and fresh water, while its goal is to improve the knowledge of the tropical Atlantic dynamics and how it affects the global ocean. A clear understanding of the dynamics of processes that affect the flow of mass and heat between the southern and the northern hemispheres in the upper few hundred meters in the tropical Atlantic and of those associated to the ocean circulation or to surface signals, from decadal, inter-annual to mesoscale periods, becomes necessary to better evaluate their contribution to the interhemispheric mass exchange. These processes are believed to be largely responsible in driving the sea surface temperature, which in turn, is a critical parameter to investigate ocean-atmospheric interactions. Output produced by regional models is also used to complement the observations and to provide additional information on their spatial and temporal variability. The subtropical cells, by bringing water masses subducted in the subtropics to the equator, and zonal currents investigated here contribute to the interhemispheric water exchange. Special attention is also given to the warm and salty anticyclonic rings shed by the North Brazil Current, which are now known to have a much broader impact, not only on interhemispheric water mass transfer, but also on the environment of remote regions. Observations from different sources are blended together, are used to validate model outputs and are also assimilated into models to obtain a more complete and accurate picture of the oceanic circulation and of its time evolution.

The South Atlantic plays a critical role in the couplingofoceanic processes between the Antarctic and the lower latitudes. The Antarctic Ocean, along with the adjacent southern seas, is of substantial importance for global climate and for the distributionofwater masses because itprovides large regions ofthe world ocean with intermediate and bottom waters. In contrast to the North Atlantic, the Southern Ocean acts more as an "information distributor", as opposed to an amplifier. Just as the North Atlantic is influencedby the South Atlantic through the contributionofwarm surface water, the incomingsupply ofNADW - in the area of the Southern Ocean as Circumantarctic Deep Water - influences the oceanography ofthe Antarctic. The competing influences from the northern and southern oceans on the current and mass budget systems can be best studied in the South Atlantic. Not only do changes in the current systems in the eastern Atlantic high-production regions affect the energy budget, they also influence the nutrient inventories, and therefore impact the entire productivity ofthe ocean. In addition, the broad region of the polar front is a critical area with respect to productivity-related circulation since it is the source of Antarctic Intermediate Water. Although theAntarctic Intermediate Watertoday liesdeeper than the water that rises in the upwelling regions, it is the long-term source ofnutrients that are ultimately responsible for the supply oforganic matter to the sea floor and to sediments.

The Agulhas Retroflection transfers heat, salt and vorticity from the Indian Ocean to the South Atlantic. The transfer is accomplished by discrete meso-scale features and by the advection of a water column of mixed Atlantic and Indian Ocean origins. The objectives of this thesis are to measure the strength of the Agulhas-South Atlantic (ASA) exchange and to develop a generalized method for the measurement of mass and thermohaline fluxes. First, ASA mass and energy fluxes are estimated by using sea surface height (SSH) anomalies from satellite altimetry to monitor Agulhas eddies, a significant component of ASA transport. ~20 eddies are tracked from SSH during 1986 - 1989. Six eddies/year are observed entering the South Atlantic; when combined with information from hydrography this suggests minimum annual ASA mass and energy fluxes of O(5x10^6) m^3/s and O(10^17) J. Next, the accuracy of altimetric tide models, critical to measurements of ASA fluxes using altimetry, is evaluated in the Agulhas region by a comparison with in situ bottom pressure (BP). The CSR 3.0 model accounts for 98.5% - 99.4% of the variance in bottom pressure at four locations, with maximum discrepancies between model and in situ tides reaching 6.5 cm. In Enhanced Thermohaline Transport Analysis (ETTA), developed herein, vertically averaged thermohaline transport coefficients are parameterized as functions of SSH and acoustic travel time (tau). These quantities, which can be directly measured, are then used as proxies to determine mass and thermohaline fluxes from time-series of altimetric SSH and tau from inverted echo sounder moorings. Using ETTA, the 1992 - 1993 baroclinic-barotropic ASA fluxes through a moored array at 30S (2E - 17E) are estimated at O(14.5x10^6) m^3/s, O(15x10^20) J and O(83x10^12) kg salt per annum. Meso-scale eddies accomplish at least 18% of the transport. Lastly, ETTA is combined with the Gravest Empirical Mode (GEM) technique to create continuous parameterizations of temperature and salinity fields with pressure, tau and SSH. Thus tau and SSH become proxies for vertically resolved thermohaline profiles. With data from the Caribbean region, GEM-ETTA is shown to have the potential to resolve inter-ocean mass and thermohaline fluxes with time and depth.

West Africa and the eastern Atlantic stretching from Mauritania in the north to Namibia in the south offer a large latitudinal stretch incorporating nearly symmetrical climatic gradients from the Equator. On the time scale of Quaternary Glacial and Interglacial cycles, today, we possess well-documented and recently published marine sedimentary records showing changes in oceanic and atmospheric circulations and terrestrial fluxes. Deep-sea sediment records contain a wide range of palaeoenvironmental indicators like oxygen and carbon isotopes, alkenones, foraminiferal and other planktonic assemblages over time periods up to and greater than 125,000 years. These are signals of temperature and circulation shifts and allow Interglacial and Glacial comparisons on a regional and inter-hemispheric scale. However, this effort to synthesize the existing knowledge cannot yet aspire to a global modelling. Linking with terrestrial records, albeit spatially patchy and generally lacking a firm chronology, this book points to shorter time scale chronologies from lakes, marshes and river deposits. Diverse and not very wellknown literature, both French and English, is reported here. Lastly, the book records recent knowledge of the first steps of human occupation of frequently hostile environments and considers the environmental impact of ancient and modern societies. * Covers the recent studies about marine Quaternary environments off West Africa, as well as continental Quaternary environments of tropical and sub-tropical West Africa (over 10,000 to 100,000 years)* Compares the parallel between palae-oenvironmental trends according to latitudinal gradients
