Roughly centered on the Four Corners region of the southwestern United States, the Colorado Plateau covers an area of 130,000 square miles. The relatively high semi-arid province boasts nine national parks, sixteen national monuments, many state parks, and dozens of wilderness areas. With the highest concentration of parklands in North America and unique geological and ecological features, the area is of particular interest to researchers. Derived from the Eighth Biennial Conference of Research on the Colorado Plateau, this third volume in a series of research on the Colorado Plateau expands upon the previous two books. This volume focuses on the integration of science into resource management issues, summarizes what criteria make a successful collaborative effort, outlines land management concerns about drought, provides summaries of current biological, sociological, and archaeological research, and highlights current environmental issues in the Four Corner States of Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado, and Utah. With broad coverage that touches on topics as diverse as historical aspects of pronghorn antelope movement patterns through calculating watershed prescriptions to the role of wind-blown sand in preserving archaeological sites on the Colorado River, this volume stands as a compendium of cuttingedge management-oriented research on the Colorado Plateau. The book also introduces, for the first time, tools that can be used to assist with collaboration efforts among landowners and managers who wish to work together toward preserving resources on the Colorado Plateau and offers a wealth of insights into land management questions for many readers, especially people interested in the natural history, biology, anthropology, wildlife, and cultural management issues of the region.

The National Park Service, Natural Resource Stewardship and Science office in Fort Collins, Colorado publishes a range of reports that address natural resource topics of interest and applicability to a broad audience in the National Park Service and others in natural resource management, including scientists, conservation and environmental constituencies, and the public. Vegetation composition and structure, soil stability, and upland hydrologic function were selected as core vital signs for long-term monitoring within the Southern Colorado Plateau Network (SCPN).The network will monitor vegetation and soils within predominant upland vegetation types across most SCPN parks. The integrated upland monitoring protocol consists of a narrative, 14 Standard Operating Procedures and 6 appendices. The narrative portion of the protocol describes the rationale for monitoring upland vegetation and soils, establishes specific monitoring objectives, and provides an overview of the monitoring efforts. The Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) provide detailed descriptions of all activities related to vegetation and soils monitoring. Monitoring methods outlined in this protocol apply to the full range of targeted upland vegetation types occurring within SCPN parks, from semi-arid grasslands and shrub steppe at lower elevations, through pinyon-juniper woodlands at mid-elevations, to montane forests and meadows at higher elevations.

Climate drives many of the environmental processes in the Southern Colorado Plateau Inventory and Monitoring Network (SCPN). In this report, the authors provide the following information: • Overview of broad-scale climatic factors and zones important to SCPN park units; • Inventory of weather and climate station locations in and near SCPN park units relevant to the National Park Service (NPS) I&M Program; • Results of an inventory of metadata on each weather station, including affiliations for weather-monitoring networks, types of measurements recorded at these stations, and information about the actual measurements (length of record, etc.); and • Initial evaluation of the adequacy of coverage for existing weather stations and recommendations for improvements in monitoring weather and climate.
