This research examines Worldwide Opportunities on Organic Farms (WWOOF) as a scene of civic agriculture that can inspire progressive embodied food politics and counteract the dominance of the neoliberal food regime. Qualitative research -- specifically autoethnography and gonzo sociology -- was utilized to explore my experiences, informal recorded interviews, and conversations that occurred on three WWOOF farms in the NYC metro area in the spring of 2016. These experiences cultivated rich data showcasing experiential realities of WWOOF farm participants, including: the researcher, four WWOOF farmers, one WWOOFer, and two WWOOF farm interns. These data have been analyzed theoretically using Lyson's (2005) civic agriculture and Carolan's (2011) embodied food politics, and they supplement the food studies literature with rich data and analysis of WWOOF. This research has shown that WWOOF has the potential to act as a network to disseminate and receive sustainable embodied food politics in line with the principles of civic agriculture to promote social, economic, and environmental sustainability and community embeddedness. WWOOF's experiential classrooms of civic agriculture can cultivate a food system founded in progressive embodied food politics that are in opposition to the neoliberal food regime.

A majority of the world’s population lives in cities. Urban areas have largely been disconnected from the processes associated with producing food. A broad range of community efforts have emerged to reconnect people in urban areas to fresh foods with expected benefits for public health. These efforts can be found in cities across the country and cross both economic and ethnic lines. They have been led by the non- scientific community and are best characterized as social movements. Expansion of agriculture to non- traditional areas including community or kitchen gardens in urban or peri- urban environments has the potential to provide a range of ecosystem services as well as reduce stressors on non- urban environments. These services/benefits include improved public health, improved human nutrition and diet, large-scale production of renewable resources, increased food security with less resilience on traditional agricultural landscapes and seascapes, enhanced ecosystem function in urban areas, and increased public appreciation for and understanding of ecosystem services. ​

The earth is in great peril, due to the corporatization of agriculture, the rising climate crisis, and the ever-increasing levels of global poverty, starvation, and desertification on a massive scale. This present condition of global trauma is not "natural," but a result of humanity's destructive actions. And, according to Masanobu Fukuoka, it is reversible. We need to change not only our methods of earth stewardship, but also the very way we think about the relationship between human beings and nature. Fukuoka grew up on a farm on the island of Shikoku in Japan. As a young man he worked as a customs inspector for plants going into and out of the country. This was in the 1930s when science seemed poised to create a new world of abundance and leisure, when people fully believed they could improve upon nature by applying scientific methods and thereby reap untold rewards. At its essence, "Farm to School" aims to close the literal and figurative distance between the foods children eat at school and the farms where this food comes from through a varied and diverse programs and activities including garden- and farm-based education and the inclusion of fresh, local produce in school meal programs. Farm to School provides a range of benefits from increasing students' consumption of fresh fruits and vegetables (Joshi, Kalb, & Beery, 2006), thereby improving students' nutrition and health, to providing important new markets for small and midscale farmers, creating multiplier effects within regional economies (Kane, Kruse, Markesteyn Ratcliffe, Sobell, & Tessman, 2009; Tuck, Haynes, King, & Pesch, 2010). Yet despite their benefits, Farm to School programs are challenging to implement and sustain, requiring alignment of diverse stakeholders' values, changes in the culture that surrounds school food, and a move away from deeply entrenched, industrial school food systems. Ultimately, Farm to School represents a paradigm shift away from the status quo and towards an environmental and social ethic much like what Thomas Lyson (2004) calls "civic agriculture."This thesis applies data from workshops held in 2010 which employed a method of community-based research and collaborative brainstorming called "power mapping" in order to better understand the potential for expanding Farm to School programs in Yuba County, California. Specifically, I use two case study locations: the county's largest school district, Marysville Joint Unified School District, and the county's smallest school district, Camptonville Elementary School District.Data indicate that there is a high degree of interest in Farm to School within Yuba County, including interest from school food service professionals, local farmers, and county agriculture agencies. Stakeholders interested in Farm to School appear to be relatively informed and sympathetic to enhancing the healthfulness of school food, attributable to national media attention on childhood obesity, food insecurity, and the quality of school meals. Yuba County's location in a rich agricultural region and California's long growing season could facilitate the implementation of Farm to School procurement. Findings indicate that Marysville Joint Unified School District is primed for scaling up its existing Farm to School procurement efforts because it serves fresh produce with every meal, has salad bars at every school in the district, and has the underlying interest from the School Food Service Director that is necessary to support such efforts. Furthermore, expressed interest by Cooperative Extension and the Yuba Sutter Farm Bureau can facilitate relationships with local farmers.Findings also indicate that Camptonville Elementary School District is primed for implementing a more comprehensive and integrated Farm to School program, as demonstrated by the flourishing school garden and a significant amount of scratch cooking used within the school lunch program. Demonstrated interest from community members and the school district's Superintendent can facilitate the expansion of current Farm to School activities. This support, combined with the town's culture of independence, self-sufficiency and community-mindedness, position the school district to implement a more comprehensive Farm to School program.
