Die evangelische Kirche sah sich in der industriell-kapitalistischen Gesellschaft des Deutschen Kaiserreiches mit einer neuen Form der sozialen Frage konfrontiert. Durch die Analyse eines repräsentativen Spektrums von Kirchenzeitungen kann das Jahr 1878 als erster Höhepunkt eines protestantischen Diskurses zur sozialen Frage identifiziert werden. Größere Teile der Pfarrerschaft und gebildeten Laien als wesentliche Träger des protestantischen Bildungsbürgertums zeichneten sich durch ein beachtliches sozialpolitisches Problembewusstsein aus. Dieser Diskurs ging mit der Institutionalisierung eines sozialen Protestantismus einher. Im Fokus der Debatte stand die Auseinandersetzung mit dem theologischen und sozialpolitischen Selbstverständnis sowie mit der Sozialdemokratie als einem weltanschaulichem Gegner, der offensiv eine Religionskritik propagierte. In der geringen Wahrnehmung des Alltagslebens der Arbeiterschaft und der Arbeitswelt kam eine soziale Distanz zum Ausdruck. Im Kontext historischer Ereignisse (zwei Attentate auf Kaiser Wilhelm I. und das Sozialistengesetz) ergaben sich Grenzen des Diskurses aus einem Nationalismus und einem konservativen Staats- und Obrigkeitsverständnis. Diese waren häufig mit einer judenfeindlichen Polemik verknüpft.

This book examines utopias in classical political economy and is based on the papers presented by leading scholars at the 22nd Heilbronn Symposium in the Economics and the Social Sciences. The book focuses on the tension between the State and utopia (the State as utopia vs. utopia instead of a state). The contributors also study the question of whether seafaring and landlocked states visualize the commonwealth differently and develop different utopias, and it is concluded they do not. The volume therefore follows the refutation of the Schumpeterian Hypothesis that more concentrated industries stimulate innovation. Though the hypothesis is refuted it still remains important, the chapters argue, because it charts out an entire research program, serves as a benchmark of definite public and private sector boundaries, and defines the grammar of discourse for constitutional economic policy in OECD states. These themes are explored in detail through contributions by economists, philosophers, and social historians. The contributors examine utopias hitherto never or rarely reviewed in the English language, making this book of interest to students and scholars in economics, political science and the history of economic thought.

Im Dezember 1970 erzwangen in Polen mächtige Proteste gegen Preiserhöhungen den Rücktritt des Parteichefs Wladyslaw Gomulka. Zugleich leitete in der DDR ein ZK-Plenum den Sturz Walter Ulbrichts ein. Die neuen Parteiführungen unter Edward Gierek und Erich Honecker schwenkten nunmehr auf einen Kurs ein, der bereits seit 1966 in der UdSSR unter der Bezeichnung "Hauptaufgabe" verfolgt wurde. Es ging darum, Wirtschaftswachstum möglichst unverzüglich in eine Anhebung des Lebensstandards umzumünzen. Das Buch beleuchtet an den Beispielen der DDR und Polens sowie mit einem vergleichenden Ausblick auf die Tschechoslowakei die sozialpolitischen Konfliktfelder und Entscheidungsprozesse zwischen 1968 und 1976. Christoph Boyer lehrt als Professor für Europäische Zeitgeschichte an der Universität Salzburg. Christa Hübner ist Historikerin in Berlin. Peter Hübner arbeitet als Projektleiter am Zentrum für Zeithistorische Forschung in Potsdam.
