As other Pacific Islands Countries, Fiji is shaped by processes of social transformations and global environmental change. This study utilises ethnographic ideals for enhancing cultural and social geographic research in the global south. A participatory in-depth analysis of rural life in three Fijian coastal villages is at the core of this study. This is framed by a historic-political overview of the burden of Fiji's colonial past. Fijian coastal villagers are not passive victims of global social transformation and climate change. Through neo-traditional movements they actively form processes of social and cultural change. Rural Fijian norms, values and cultural identity crystallize in robust communities. Via modern forms of communication and transportation Fijians established globalised networks securing individuals' quality of life. Family members living far from their home villages remain in contact with their relatives. This way they keep their Fijian Identities as source of wellbeing and as well support the villagers' material wealth and knowledge to enhance capabilities. Merely regarding hazardous climate change impacts the passed on knowledge is spread abridged and poorly fitting into local value systems. Therefore, misperceptions and maladaptations are prevalent. In consequence this study pleads for development agencies to act culturally sensitive and to critically reflect ethnocentric worldviews in order not to harm Fijian values and wellbeing.

This book explores how vulnerable and resilient communities from SIDS are affected by climate change; proposes and, where possible, evaluates adaptation activities; identifies factors capable of enhancing or inhibiting SIDS people’s long-term ability to deal with climate change; and critiques the discourses, vocabularies, and constructions around SIDS dealing with climate change. The contributions, written by well-established scholars, as well as emerging authors and practitioners, in the field, include conceptual papers, coherent methodological approaches, and case studies from the communities based in the Caribbean Sea and the Indian, Atlantic, and Pacific Oceans. In their introduction, the editors contextualise the book within the current literature. They emphasise the importance of stronger links between climate change science and policy in SIDS, both to increase effectiveness of policy and also boost scholarly enquiry in the context of whose communities are often excluded by mainstream research. This book is timely and appropriate, given the recent commission by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) of a Special Report that aims at addressing vulnerabilities, “especially in islands and coastal areas, as well as the adaptation and policy development opportunities” following the Paris Agreement. Coupled with this, there is also the need to support the policy community with further scientific evidence on climate change–related issues in SIDS, accompanying the first years of implementation of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

This book examines questions about the changing nature of security and insecurity in Pacific Island Countries (PICs). Previous discussions of security in the Pacific region have been largely determined by the geopolitical interests of the Global North. Als Ende der 80er Jahre die ehemals sozialistischen Länder Mittel- und Osteuropas begannen, ihre Planwirtschaften in Marktwirtschaften zu transformieren, waren die meisten Ökonomen sehr optimistisch, was die Geschwindigkeit und den Erfolg des Systemwechsels betraf. Daran gemessen, ist die Transformation bisher in vielerlei Hinsicht enttäuschend verlaufen: Produktion und Beschäftigung sind zunächst einmal kräftig eingebrochen, Preisniveaustabilität ist längst noch nicht erreicht, und die Privatisierung kommt in den meisten Ländern nur schleppend voran. Als Folge davon wachsen die sozialen und politischen Spannungen, kommt es zu Migrations- und Sezessionsbewegungen und droht die Transformation bisweilen sogar zu scheitern. Diesen Befund zu erklären ist eine besondere Herausforderung der Wirtschaftswissenschaft, insbesondere der Ordnungstheorie. Der Ausschuß für Wirtschaftssysteme des Vereins für Socialpolitik hat sich deshalb auf seiner Jahrestagung 1996 vom 22. bis 24. September in Kassel einmal mehr mit der Systemtransformation beschäftigt. Dieses Mal ging es zum einen um die ordnungstheoretische Erklärung des institutionellen Wandels im Transformationsprozeß, zum anderen um die Analyse der Transformationsdefizite im Bereich der sozialen Sicherung, der Geldordnung, der Privatisierung und der Unternehmensverfassung. Der vorliegende Sammelband faßt die dazu vorgelegten Beiträge zusammen.
