"Die soziale Welt und die Theorie der sozialen Handlung," das aus gleich zu erkHirenden Griinden hinzugefiigt wurde, obwohl es yom Autor nieht aufgefiihrt worden war. AIle vorliegenden Abhandlungen sind, wie der Titel dieses Bandes anzeigt, Studien zur soziologischen Theorie. Sie gruppieren sieh nach den allge meinen Kategorien der reinen und angewandten Theorie, wobei die erste Gruppe die erst en zwei Abhandlungen dieses Buches um faBt. Die Reihenfolge, in der sieh das Material innerhalb der zwei Hauptteile prasentiert, ist im groBen und ganzen die chronolo gische Folge der Erstveroffentlichung. Zunachst ein paar Bemerkungen iiber den Band als ganzen. Der Titel "Angewandte Theorie" kann vielleieht miBverstand lich erscheinen, wenn. man den Schliissel-Satz von Teil2 in dem Sinne liest, als wiirde er Einsiehten in die Struktur praktischer Ziele beinhalten. Diese Studien besch1i. ftigen sieh Dieht mit "So zial-Technik" (social engineering) oder "Wie lost man soziale Probleme?" Sie beschaftigen sieh, wie der Autor in seinem ganzen Lebenswerk, mit der Anwendung der Theorie auf ein besseres Verstandnis der sozialen Realitat. Ihr Akzent liegt mehr auf dem Verstehen als auf der Anwendung. Und dennoch fiihren die hier entwiekelten Interpretationen des tieferen Sinnes von mensch lichem Verhalten naher zu einem sinnvollen Zugang zu dessen Problemen als es Abhandlung iiber "Techniken und Methoden des Losens von Problemen" je konnten. Der Mann, der mit einem Hauch von Selbstreflektion Aufsatze schrieb iiber "Gleiehheit" und iiber "Den Fremden" und iiber "Den Heimkehrel," ist in allen menschliehen Dingen ein Weiser und nieht minder ein Forscher und Gelehrter.

Die Soziale Welt versteht sich seit 65 Jahren als eine Zeitschrift, die sich weder einem bestimmten Paradigma oder einer bestimmten Theorie verhaftet fuhlt, noch inhaltlichen oder thematischen Begrenzungen unterliegt. Die Soziale Welt war stets ein Forum fur alles, was das Fach Soziologie bis in seine Grenzbereiche pragt. Das einzige Exklusionskriterium fur Texte war und ist die akademische Qualitat der eingereichten Arbeiten - eine Qualitat, die in Peer-review-Verfahren mit den Mitteln des Faches selbst ermittelt wird. Ein solches Selektionskriterium fuhrt dazu, dass sich in den 65 vorliegenden Jahrgangen tatsachlich das Fach in seiner selbst erzeugten Gestalt rekonstruieren lasst. Der vorliegende Band hat eine solche Rekonstruktion im Sinn - 28 Aufsatze aus den vergangenen Jahrzehnten werden von Soziologinnen und Soziologen einer Relekture unterzogen, erneut gewurdigt, in einen historischen und systematischen Zusammenhang gestellt und somit zu einem Bild von 65 Jahren deutschsprachiger Soziologie zusammengefugt. Der Band versteht sich demnach als ein Kaleidoskop dieser 65 Jahre - wie der Begriff schon sagt, geht es darum, nach den ansprechendsten Gestalten zu suchen, in denen Begriffe - Positionen - Debatten der letzten Jahrzehnte sichtbar werden. Das Ziel freilich ist kein historisches, sondern ein Beitrag zur Positionsbestimmung der gegenwartigen Soziologie.

The term “Crisis of Representation” rose to fame through Michel Foucault. The crisis, in the context of this issue, has not only a political and economic dimension, but a cultural, aesthetic and religious one as well. Thus, a serious inquiry into this complex and multidimensional phenomenon requires an interdisciplinary approach. The issue targets the phenomena at hand through 15 contributions – all with unique and innovative approaches to the topic. One common aim that holds the issue together is the analysis of the nature of the crisis, which helps to find suitable theoretical frameworks. Those who advocate ideas about "postmodernity" and "post-industrialism" offer radical critiques of existing social and political institutions. But they provide very little in place of those institutions. It is all very well to criticize the limitations of social democracy, the welfare state, trade unionism, and social classes as agents of change, but once these have been thrown into crisis what other institutions do we have to depend on? The Reinvention of Politics, suggests we should think again about forging a new model of politics for our times. An active, devolved civil society, Beck argues, can sustain the claim that modernity is inherently democratic. For many issues now - for example, those involving technology, environment protest, the family, or gender relations - belong to the domain of what the author calls "subpolitics". The postmodern critique of modernity, in Beck's view, is based on mistaken generalizations about a transitional phase in the evolution of modern society. What is needed, he argues, is the reinvention of politics, corresponding to th new demands of a society which remains modern, but which has progressed beyond the earlier form of industrial society. This book will be essential reading for second-year undergraduates and above in the fields of social and political theory, sociology and political science.
