Ausgangspunkt des Buches ist die seit einigen Jahren in der Politikwissenschaft, aber auch in den anderen Sozialwissenschaften intensiv geführte Diskussion über soziales Vertrauen und dessen unterstellte positive Effekte auf Kooperation. Sie wird dominiert durch zwei große Theorieansätze, den ökonomischen oder Rational Choice-Vertrauensansatz und den soziologischen Vertrauensansatz. Bislang sind diese beiden Ansätze kaum in fruchtbarer Weise miteinander verbunden worden, obwohl dies in der Vertrauensdiskussion häufig gefordert wird. An dieser Forschungslücke setzt das Buch an. Nach einer ausführlichen Darstellung der beiden Vertrauenstheorien zeigt es auf, wie eine systematische, theoretisch und methodologisch begründete Theorieintegration der soziologischen und der ökonomischen Vertrauenstheorie gelingen kann. Mit Hilfe moderner Datenerhebungs- und Auswertungsverfahren (Faktorieller Survey und Mehrebenenanalysen) wird dieses integrative Theoriemodell auf seine empirische Bewährung hin überprüft.

Vereine, Vertrauen, Normen und Werte - kurz: Sozialkapital - sind der Schlüssel zum Funktionieren moderner Demokratien; so lautet das Fazit Robert Putnams aus seiner intensiven Beschäftigung mit der italienischen Regionalverwaltungsreform. Daraufhin wurde in vielen politikwissenschaftlichen Forschungsarbeiten untersucht, inwiefern Vereine als 'Schulen der Demokratie' fungieren, soziales Vertrauen wie ein 'Schmiermittel im Räderwerk des sozialen Systems' wirkt und kooperative Normen die 'moralischen Grundlagen' des gesellschaftlichen Miteinanders bilden. Obwohl angenommen wird, dass Sozialkapital bereits im Jugendalter eine wichtige Ressource darstellt, standen im Mittelpunkt derartiger Studien lediglich Erwachsene. Daher untersucht Julia Schäfer, welchen Wirkungszusammenhängen Sozialkapital in der Jugendphase unterliegt. Anhand von sieben Jugendstudien werden die Bedingungen und Konsequenzen von Sozialkapital im Jugendalter betrachtet. Es zeigt sich, dass Sozialkapital zwar eine wichtige Rolle für die politische Sozialisation spielt, dabei aber bereits deutlich von der sonstigen Ressourcenausstattung abhängig ist.

English summary: Close relationships that go beyond family ties and kinships have become an interdisciplinary research subject that has received a lot of attention. Variations of social ties such as friendship, patronage and social networks ensue from different historical and cultural contexts and, hence, constitute a significant yet under-represented subject of interdisciplinary research. Questions such as the changing semantics of friendship, historical, intercultural and political practices of friendship, patronage and loyalty were the focus of an international conference for a critical discussion and re-assessment of values and norms that constitute such relationships in different cultures and epochs, as well as the social circumstances that determine them. Aspects of interest included the constitution and representation of the body and gender and the growth of trust and deceit, as well as the culturally and historically different practices and semantics of friendship and patronage and the way they are perceived according to social status and social and historical contexts. The results of the conference are presented in this volume. German description: Nahbeziehungen, die uber familiare und verwandtschaftliche Bindungen hinausgehen, haben sich zu einem vielbeachteten Thema interdisziplinarer Forschung entwickelt. This volume conceives cooperation in broad terms as any form of mutual making, in which goals, means, and procedures are seen as ongoing accomplishments. From the exchanges of goods or information, to the interactions between bodies or organizations, and the coordination between colleagues, competitors, friends or foes. Mutually making the conditions of mutual making entails translating heterogeneous interests, negotiating conflicting values and articulating distributed activities.
