Auch aufgrund der aktuellen Geschehnisse ist das Verhalten der Fußballfans in der Bundesrepublik Deutschland (BRD) in den letzten Jahren wieder verstärkt in den öffentlichen und medialen Fokus gerückt. Angesichts von Spielunterbrechungen oder Abbrüchen in Folge des Einsatzes von Wurfgeschossen oder illegaler Pyrotechnik, gewalttätigen Auseinandersetzungen unter den Fans, Schmähgesängen, beleidigenden oder rassistischen Choreographien der Fangruppen und nicht zuletzt dem notwendig gewordenen, äußerst kostspieligen wöchentlichen Einsatz hunderter Polizeibeamter im Rahmen der Bundesligaspiele wird der Kultur der Fußballfans vielerorts mit Argwohn begegnet. Dazu beigetragen hat sicherlich auch die Berichterstattung der Massenmedien, welche sich bisweilen äußerst plakativ, polemisch und vor allem sachlich undifferenziert gestaltet. Vielfach werden ganze Fangruppierungen unter Generalverdacht gestellt. Von ‚Verbrechern‘ und ‚Chaoten‘ ist die Rede, welche das Massenereignis Fußball als willkommene Bühne für Krawall und Provokation ausnutzen. Fraglos ist Gewalt gegen friedfertige gegnerische Fans, Spieler oder Schiedsrichter scharf zu verurteilen und natürlich kein Fundament für die Erhaltung des Fußballsports in Deutschland als Massenereignis und ‚Volksreligion‘. Jedoch ist diesbezüglich eine differenziertere Wahrnehmung aller Beteiligten vonnöten. Welche Emotionen dürfen im Fußballstadion ausgelebt werden? Wo verschwimmt die Grenze zwischen hochemotionalem „Ultra“-Fan, der oft unter erheblichem Einsatz von Freizeit und Geld sein Team unterstützt, und gewaltsuchendem „Hooligan“, welcher den Fußball für die Auslebung seiner Gewaltgelüste benutzt? Welche Rolle spielt die teils repressive Vorgehensweise der Polizei bei der Bekämpfung des Gewaltproblems in deutschen Stadien? Um diese Fragen beantworten und einen möglichst weitreichenden Einblick in die vielschichtigen Lebenswelten der innerdeutschen Fankulturen gewähren zu können, wird anhand von Fachliteratur versucht, die relevanten Begrifflichkeiten und Ausprägungen des ‚Fan-Seins‘ zu definieren, das Selbstverständnis der verschiedenen Fangruppen aufzuzeigen und anhand von Beispielen darzulegen. Die vorliegende Arbeit hat zum Ziel, die Tätigkeit der deutschen Fanprojekte in ihrer Gesamtheit zu erfassen und vorzustellen sowie die zugrunde liegende pädagogische Methodik und Konzeption der Fanprojektarbeit nachvollziehbar zu machen.

Ishtyle follows queer South Asian men across borders into gay neighborhoods, nightclubs, bars, and house parties in Bangalore and Chicago. Bringing the cultural practices they are most familiar with into these spaces, these men accent the aesthetics of nightlife cultures through performance. Kareem Khubchandani develops the notion of “ishtyle” to name this accented style, while also showing how brown bodies inadvertently become accents themselves, ornamental inclusions in the racialized grammar of desire. Ishtyle allows us to reimagine a global class perpetually represented as docile and desexualized workers caught in the web of global capitalism. The book highlights a different kind of labor, the embodied work these men do to feel queer and sexy together. Engaging major themes in queer studies, Khubchandani explains how his interlocutors’ performances stage relationships between: colonial law and public sexuality; film divas and queer fans; and race, caste, and desire. Ultimately, the book demonstrates that the unlikely site of nightlife can be a productive venue for the study of global politics and its institutional hierarchies.
