Diese Arbeit ist eine soziolinguistische Analyse des Hochdeutschen auf der Basis einer empirischen Untersuchung. Vor der Befragung war eine Definition des Hochdeutschen entwickelt worden, die empirisch umsetzbar sein mußte. Mit einem Fragebogen wurden 2218 Hochdeutschsprechende in sechs Klein- und sechs Großstädten Deutschlands befragt. Einfache Auszählungen ergaben, wieviele der Befragten neben Hochdeutsch auch Regionalsprache oder Dialekt sprechen, welche sozialen Merkmale sie aufweisen und welche Einstellungen sie zum Dialekt und zum Hochdeutschen haben. Komplexere statistische Verfahren ermittelten den Einfluß der Sprachkompetenz auf die Spracheinstellung, außerdem die Bedeutung des Heimatortes für die Dialektkompetenz und insbesondere den Zusammenhang zwischen Sprachkompetenz und sozialen Merkmalen. In Einzelschritten ließen sich Sozialdaten auf Einflußbereiche reduzieren, so daß dahinterstehende Faktoren sichtbar wurden. Die individuelle Sprachkompetenz in der Mischung aus Hochdeutsch, Regionalsprache und Dialekt ist nicht auf Einzelmerkmale wie Dialektgebiet oder soziale Schicht zurückzuführen, sondern beruht auf einer Reihe von Faktoren, deren gegenseitige Beeinflussung in einem Faktorenbündel beschreibbar sind. Es zeigte sich, daß in der Sprachgeschichte des Hochdeutschen dieselben Faktoren wirksam waren, die noch heute für die sozialen Strukturen der Sprachgemeinschaft von Bedeutung sind.
