Ein weiterer Aspekt sollen Theorien von Armut sein, die Ursachen, Erscheinungsformen und Auswirkungen von Armut in unserer Gesellschaft beleuchten. In diesem Vorwort möchte ich darauf hinweisen, dass es hier um eine ganz andere Armut geht, als die in den Dritte Welt Ländern bzw. in Kriegsgebieten wie Afghanistan oder dem Nahen Osten. Es soll hier primär um die Armut in unserem Wohlfahrtsstaat Deutschland gehen, wie sie fassbar wird und inwiefern sie in Erscheinung tritt.

When Sociological Impressionism was first published in 1981, it was the first comprehensive study on Simmel’s social theory to appear in English since 1925. A pioneering work, it did much to bring about the rediscovery of Georg Simmel as one of the key sociologists of the twentieth century. David Frisby provides a provocative introduction to aspects of Simmel’s social theory, seriously challenging many interpretations of his work, most notably the view that Simmel produced a formal sociology. By drawing on many little-known essays and pieces by Simmel and his contemporaries, the book locates him within the social and intellectual milieu in which he was working. This is a reissue of the second edition, published in 1992, which includes a new afterword confronting critical responses to the first edition. Anschliessend soll eine Historisierung der Armut angestrebt werden, wobei nicht die lückenlose Geschichte der Armutskonzepte, sondern vielmehr die Diversität des Armutsverständnisses im Fokus stehen soll. Es geht dabei also nicht um die Entstehung von Armut durch Ungleichheit oder Börsen-Crashs, sondern um die gesellschaftliche Konstruktion von Armut. Zum Schluss dieser Arbeit soll jedoch besonders die Frage beantwortet werden, ob man Armut definieren kann und wie diese Definition festgelegt werden sollte.

Contemporary sociology increasingly seems to be adopting a perspective similar to that on which Georg Simmel's analysis and interpretations rested. To a significant degree, therefore, sociologists continue to turn to Simmel for a basic understanding of the forms and processes of social life.
