Die Periode zwischen 1914 und 1945 in Deutschland und Europa is- vor allem im Vergleich mit der Nachkriegszeit - gekennzeichnet durch eine außerordentliche Häufung pOlitischer Umwälzungen und wirtschaftlich-sozialer Krisen. Die Ereignisse sind bekannt: der erste Weltkrieg 1914 - 1918, die russischen Revolutionen von 1917 mit dem Resultat einer neuen Gesellschaftsordnung unter der Dik tatur der bolschewistischen Partei, die deutschen Revolutionen von 1918/19, der Übergang vom monarchischen Konstitutionalismus des Kaiserreichs zur parlamentarischen Demokratie der Weimarer Republik, der Versailler Vertrag, die Inflation von 1923, die große Weltwirtschaftskrise ab 1929, der Aufstieg des Faschismus in Europa, besonders der Sieg Mussolinis in Italien 1922 und die nationalsozialistische Gewaltherrschaft in Deutschland ab 1933, der zweite Weltkrieg 1939 - 1945, der Holocaust und der Abwurf der ersten Atombomben auf Hiroshima und Nagasaki. Im Zentrum der Arbei t steht die Frage, wie die Soziologen Franz 0 p p e n h e i m e r (1864 - 1943) und Alfred Web e r (1868 - 1958) die damalige "Gegenwartskrise" mit Hilfe einer Theorie der sozialen Frage (Oppenheimer) und einer Theorie der Kulturkrise (A. Weber) sozio logisch erklärten bzw. deuteten. 1. Sind die Zeitdiagnosen Oppenheimers und A. Webers, die vierzig, sechzig, siebzig und mehr Jahre zurückliegen, heute noch aktuell oder kommt ihnen nur wissenschaftsgeschichtliche Bedeutung zu? Sie sind m. E. bei aller Zeitbezogenheit im einzelnen in ihrem Kern auch heute aktuell.

The revelation that the U.S. Department of Defense had hired anthropologists for its Human Terrain System project—assisting its operations in Afghanistan and Iraq—caused an uproar that has obscured the participation of sociologists in similar Pentagon-funded projects. As the contributors to Sociology and Empire show, such affiliations are not new. Sociologists have been active as advisers, theorists, and analysts of Western imperialism for more than a century. The collection has a threefold agenda: to trace an intellectual history of sociology as it pertains to empire; to offer empirical studies based around colonies and empires, both past and present; and to provide a theoretical basis for future sociological analyses that may take empire more fully into account. In the 1940s, the British Colonial Office began employing sociologists in its African colonies. In Nazi Germany, sociologists played a leading role in organizing the occupation of Eastern Europe. Theodor Geiger (1891-1952) zählt zu den vernachlässigten Klassikern der deutschen Soziologie. Realismus und Ideologiekritik bilden die Klammer für ein Opus, das von der Schichtungs-, Rechts- und Erziehungssoziologie über Fragen zur Eugenik bis hin zur Erkenntnis-, Modernitäts- und Demokratietheorie reicht. Die vorliegende Studie ist der Versuch, trotz der zahlreichen Wechselfälle in Geigers Leben eine Gesamtwürdigung seines umfangreichen und heterogenen Werkes vorzulegen. Berücksichtigt werden die zum Teil schwer zugänglichen Schriften aus dem skandinavischen Exil sowie einige bislang unveröffentlichte Arbeiten aus dem Nachlass. Dies erlaubt es, wissenschaftsbiographisch aufschlussreiche Aspekte aus der Zeit der nationalsozialistischen Machtergreifung zu erhellen. Der Vergleich mit alten und neuen Klassikern macht deutlich, dass dem "Querdenker" Geiger innerhalb der frühen deutschen Soziologie eine Ausnahmerolle zukommt. So ist er zum einen Pionier einer kritischen Problem- und Wirklichkeitswissenschaft, der danach strebt, die Soziologie mit den Mitteln der empirischen Sozialforschung und der Sozialstatistik auf eine methodisch kontrollierte Grundlage zu stellen. Zugleich ist Geiger aber auch Machtkritiker, Wertnihilist und Modernist. Als Ausdruck dieser Grundposition lässt sich nicht nur die entschiedene Gegnerschaft zu Kulturkritik, Gemeinschaftsschwärmerei und der NS-Ideologie verstehen, sondern auch sein Beitrag zur Entwicklung einer "realistischen" Demokratiekonzeption.
