This past year has been one of incredible advances but also heightened political and economic uncertainty. The successful launch and subsequent alignment of the James Webb Space Telescope represents a significant advance in telescope technology. The images produced by the telescope have been stunning, providing views of the universe in unprecedented clarity and detail. This data contains a wealth of information that astronomers worldwide will use to increase our understanding of the cosmos for many years to come. The upcoming launch of Artemis I brings us one step closer to the return of manned missions to the Moon. With the help of the Space Launch System (SLS) rocket-the most powerful in the world-Artemis I will push the boundary of spaceflight by travelling significantly farther and faster than previous Moon missions. Its ambitious orbital path will serve as preparation for future Artemis missions, with the goal of manned flights (Artemis II) and a lunar surface landing as part of the Artemis III mission. Commercial space flights, part space tourism and part civilian research, have opened access to space for a wide variety of people. Whether quick suborbital jaunts or short-term visits to the ISS, these commercial flights are an indication of the beginning of a shift in the accessibility of the space field from being reserved only for trained astronauts to being accessible to civilian researchers and tourists alike. NASA's push to return to the Moon, together with the increase in commercial space flights in 2022, have made space exploration a realizable goal and have increased public support for space endeavors. At the same time, the political environment of 2022 has been filled with uncertainty and aggression. The continuing hostilities in Ukraine have compromised the spirit of goodwill and cooperation that has characterized the working relationships on the International Space Station, which has been a symbol of hope for the peaceful use of space since the end of the Cold War. In addition, recent tests of anti-satellite capabilities by multiple countries have added to both the congestion of lower Earth orbit (LEO) debris and concerns about national assets in near-Earth orbital space. It is becoming increasingly clear that the arena of space, which is vital to national security as well as international relations, is one that will require active protection. With so much uncertainty in the world, advances in space research and space exploration provide a hopeful outlook for the future. It is our hope that the perspectives presented in the articles in this journal will provide increased understanding of the strategic value of space and the need to ensure the security of the space domain as well as the potential prospects and challenges of space exploration. The stakes in the race to industrialize space may turn out to be incredibly high: the next Industrial Revolution may very well occur there. This US government document provides an essential status update. This document is a report on the state of the space industrial base in 2022, discussing the current state of the space industry and its challenges and opportunities. It emphasizes the need for collaboration between government and industry, as well as a clear and cohesive long-term vision for space. The report also addresses the growing competition from China and the importance of continued investment and innovation in the industry. It concludes with recommendations for improving the US space industry and ensuring its future success, including increased collaboration and investment in STEM education and workforce development. This annotated edition illustrates the capabilities of the AI Lab for Book-Lovers to add context and ease-of-use to manuscripts. It includes five types of abstracts, building from simplest to more complex: TLDR (one word), ELI5, TLDR (vanilla), Scientific Style, and Action Items; four essays to increase viewpoint diversity: Formal Dissent, Red Team Critique, and MAGA Perspective; and Notable Passages and Nutshell Summaries for each page.

new activities have called into question current regulatory frameworks and policy standards for managing space that were largely developed for an outdated model. We are seeing increasing uncertainty in regulation and, in some cases, not even a clear picture of which U.S. government agencies bear the responsibility of handling which issues. There is also friction between regulators and new actors as an increasingly congested space makes regulations more burdensome for new entrants and gives the competitive advantage to those who have long been in space. The space domain is an international domain that is predicated on cooperation and partnerships enabled by safe space operations. In order to manage this domain and address growing challenges, the space sector requires a holistic approach. Each chapter of this compendium describes key high priority areas that should be addressed over the next few years. Each subsection covers an issue topic that the Space Safety Institute has examined extensively and concludes with specific recommendations for space operators, regulators, and other decisionmakers. Some recommendations are broad outlooks for the future, others are concrete next steps that the space sector can take. The variety of scope and scale of these recommendations reflects the diverse set of space safety challenges we are facing today.

This book is an ideal and practical resource on the potential impact Artificial Intelligence (AI) can have in space sciences and applications. AI for Space Application presents a hands-on approach to browse in the subject and to learning how to do. AI is not yet fully accepted as a pervasive technology in space applications because they are often mission-critical and the cost of space equipment and modules raises skepticism on any practical use and reliability. However, it is evident that its potential impact on many aspects is dramatic. Starting from either actual or experimental realizations, the book accompanies the reader through such fascinating subjects like space exploration, autonomous navigation and landing, rover control and guidance on rough surfaces, image analysis automation for planet or star classification, and for space debris avoidance without human intervention. This kind of approach may facilitate further investigations on the same or similar subjects, as the future of space explorations is going toward adopting AI. The intended audience of the book are researchers from academia and space industries and practitioners in related start-ups.

This book presents the first-ever comprehensive analysis of ASEAN space development programs. Written by prominent actors in the region, it goes beyond a mere exposé of the history, current status and future plans of ASEAN space technology development and utilization programs, by analyzing the conditions in which a space program can be initiated in the region. It does so in two ways: on the one hand, it questions the relevance of and motivations behind the inception of space development programs in developing countries, and on the other hand, it focuses on the very specific context of ASEAN (a highly disaster-prone area shaped by unique political alliances with a distinctive geopolitical ecosystem and enormous economic potential, etc.). Last but not least, after having analyzed established and emerging space programs in the region, it provides concrete recommendations for any regional or extra-regional developing nation eager to gain a foothold in space. As such, this book offers a valuable resource for researchers and engineers in the field of space technology, as well as for space agencies and government policymakers.
