For over a century Spain controlled the greatest empire the world had ever seen, and its collapse provoked, both then as it does now, a range of analyses over which there has been little agreement. In the second edition of this successful text, Henry Kamen asks: was the Golden Age of Spain in the 16th century actually an illusion? By examining some of the key issues involved, Kamen offers a balanced discussion of this fundamental question. Golden Age Spain: - Offers a concise introduction to the major themes and debates - Is now thoroughly revised and updated in the light of the latest research - Contains new chapters which cover such topics as culture and religion - Highlights key issues and questions at the start of each chapter - Includes a helpful glossary and an expanded bibliography to aid further study. Approachable and easy-to-follow, this text is essential reading for anyone with an interest in one of the most fascinating periods of Spanish history.

English Abstract: After five years of double-dip recession, the Spanish economy entered a phase of slow recovery at the end of 2013. According to the international experts, this economic revival is mainly due to export performance. In spite of the economic slowdown at the level of developing/emerging countries, the GDP growth has accelerated in developed countries, which has created the prerequisites for a favourable external demand. At the same time, the reinvigoration of activity in the manufacturing and services sectors has gradually boosted employment and the domestic demand has increased. The Spanish government has managed to reach an acceptable level of credibility on the external financial markets, implying a progressive decrease of the bond yields below the pre-crisis level. In order to consolidate this credibility, it is necessary that the fiscal consolidation process continues at an adequate pace, taking into account the labour market realities and the fact that more than a quarter of population is unemployed.

Fully revised and updated to take account of the latest research by historians, the second edition of this popular volume remains the only textbook in English to give full coverage to both domestic and foreign policy in the period. Henry Kamen presents Spain as a poor nation thrust reluctantly into an imperial role for which it was never fully equipped, and which provoked deep internal divisions and conflicts. He observes that Spaniards continued to question and debate the unification of their country, the conquest of America, the wars in the Netherlands, the role of the Inquisition, the expulsion of the Moriscos and many other aspects of public policy.

Spain is an immemorial land like no other, one that James A. Michener, the Pulitzer Prize–winning author and celebrated citizen of the world, came to love as his own. Iberia is Michener’s enduring nonfiction tribute to his cherished second home. In the fresh and vivid prose that is his trademark, he not only reveals the celebrated history of bullfighters and warrior kings, painters and processions, cathedrals and olive orchards, he also shares the intimate, often hidden country he came to know, where the congeniality of living souls is thrust against the dark weight of history. Wild, contradictory, passionately beautiful, this is Spain as experienced by a master writer. BONUS: This edition includes an excerpt from James A. Michener's Hawaii. Praise for Iberia “From the glories of the Prado to the loneliest stone villages, here is Spain, castle of old dreams and new realities.”—The New York Times “Massive, beautiful . . . unquestionably some of the best writing on Spain [and] the best that Mr. Michener has ever done on any subject.”—The Wall Street Journal “A dazzling panorama . . . one of the richest and most satisfying books about Spain in living memory.”—Saturday Review “Kaleidoscopic . . . This book will make you fall in love with Spain.”—The Houston Post
