According to the coplanar ratio principle (CRP), when the luminance range in the image is larger than 30:1 the lightness of a target surface depends on the luminance ratio between that target and its adjacent, coplanar neighbor. This conclusion was based on experiments (Gilchrist, 1977) using a dihedral corner display in which a change in the perceived spatial position of a target produced large changes in its perceived lightness, with no significant change in the observer's retinal image. Using variations of this dihedral display, a series of experiments was conducted to test a group of conflicting claims made by CRP, the anchoring theory (Gilchrist et al., 1999) and other writers (e.g. Kardos, 1934, Howe, 2006) concerning the role of coplanarity, adjacency, surroundedness, articulation, and luminance range. Generally consistent with the predictions of the anchoring theory, the results show the following: (1) Articulation can substantially increase the depth effect. (2) Target lightness depends, not simply on its adjacent coplanar luminance, but on the highest luminance in its plane, irrespective of its position relative to the target. (3) When two or more levels of illumination are present on a plane, target lightness depends on the highest luminance in its framework of illumination, not on the highest luminance in its plane. (4) The size of the depth effect depends on the luminance ratio between the highest luminance values in the two planes, not on the overall luminance range across the planes. Thus strong depth effects can be obtained with a luminance range no greater than 30:1. (5) Surface continuity within a plane is necessary for the operation of coplanar ratios, although surroundedness can partially substitute for continuity, but only within the brightly illuminated plane.

Lightness Brightness And Transparency written by Alan L. Gilchrist and has been published by Psychology Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-09-05 with Psychology categories.

This volume deals with the visual perception of lightness, brightness, and transparency of surfaces, both under minimal laboratory conditions and in complex images typical of everyday life. Each chapter analyzes the challenging problem of how a pattern of light intensities on the retina is transformed into the visual experience of varying shades of grey, transparent surfaces, and light and shadow. One important theme which unifies the group of contributions is the recognition that the perception of surface lightness is rooted fundamentally in the encoding of relative intensities of light within the retinal image, not intensities per se. A second important unifying theme is an appreciation of the multiple dimensions of the visual experience of lightness, brightness, and transparency -- people do not perceive the lightness of surfaces by discarding information concerning the light illuminating those surfaces; rather, they perceive a pattern of illumination projected onto a pattern of surface greys. The long-fascinating problems of surface lightness and color perception have become very active topics recently as a resurging interest within the visual perception community has coincided with an increasing appreciation of the centrality of these problems by the emerging machine vision community. The best of recent psychophysical work on lightness perception, as presented in this volume, will be of great interest to both of these communities. This book also marks a synthesis of old and new. A traditional, strongly Gestalt, approach that had fallen into neglect is updated in the light of new quantitative systematic methods and important later discoveries, such as the disappearance of stabilized retinal images. The book draws on such diverse approaches as Gestalt and ecological psychology, threshold psychophysics, and computational vision, advancing our understanding of the interrelations among surface color, illumination, perceived depth, shading, and transparency.

The availability of electric lighting has changed the lives of people the world over and lighting is a major consumer of energy, yet little has been written about the forms of lighting that can alter human visual capabilities and enhance productivity, ensure comfort and create appropriate lighting conditions. It is important to understand the forms of lighting available, and their appropriateness to specific activities, in order to apply the technology most effectively. This book is a comprehensive review of the interaction of people and lighting and supercedes the author's classic Human Factors in Lighting. The technology has changed markedly in recent years with the introduction of new light sources and new methods of light distribution. The significance of specialist lighting applications, such as photobiology, are now becoming better understood. The nature of work itself has changed, and hence so have lighting requirements. Equally, the development of the technology has created new opportunities for improving peoples' work and leisure environments.

Time-of-flight (TOF) cameras provide a depth value at each pixel, from which the 3D structure of the scene can be estimated. This new type of active sensor makes it possible to go beyond traditional 2D image processing, directly to depth-based and 3D scene processing. Many computer vision and graphics applications can benefit from TOF data, including 3D reconstruction, activity and gesture recognition, motion capture and face detection. It is already possible to use multiple TOF cameras, in order to increase the scene coverage, and to combine the depth data with images from several colour cameras. Mixed TOF and colour systems can be used for computational photography, including full 3D scene modelling, as well as for illumination and depth-of-field manipulations. This work is a technical introduction to TOF sensors, from architectural and design issues, to selected image processing and computer vision methods.
