Monitoring air pollution plumes in emergency situations (industrial accidents, natural disasters, deliberate terrorist releases, etc.) becomes an issue of utmost importance in cities worldwide, given the dramatic effects that the released pollutants can cause. In these situations, the pollution plume is strongly dynamic leading to a fast dispersion of pollutants in the atmosphere. Thus, the need for a real-time response is very strong and a solution to get a precise mapping of pollution dispersion is needed to mitigate risks. Failure to do so could result in devastating consequences, underscoring the importance of air pollution monitoring in emergency scenarios. Nonetheless, achieving accurate mapping of pollution dispersion in real-time remains a challenging task, requiring innovative solutions to help authorities make informed decisions and take swift action to protect public health and the environment. In this thesis, we focus on air pollution monitoring in an emergency context using a fleet of drones, with three main areas of investigation: 1) predicting dynamic air pollution concentration in space and time; 2) optimizing the path planning of drones to improve the accuracy of pollution mapping; 3) developing and validating a generic framework for monitoring pollution plumes in emergencies. Through this work, we develop a spatio-temporal Deep Learning model for multi-point forecasting of pollution concentrations, and we built upon several uncertainty quantification techniques to make it more trustworthy. Furthermore, we examine and identify the main challenges related to the dynamic nature of the underlying phenomenon as well as its emergency context; and we suggest a new systemic approach for monitoring dynamic air pollution based on aerial sensing. The latter combines Deep Learning approaches, with Data Assimilation techniques, while relying at the same time on adequate path-planning strategies. This framework is meticulously studied and extended later to handle data paucity issues encountered in such a context through a transfer learning solution based on physics-based modeling, hence making it operational. Finally, we address meticulously the drones path planning problem with the purpose of improving the air pollution mapping quality, and we provide a Multi-Agent Reinforcement Learning solution where the impact of the number of drones as well as the simulation errors is carefully investigated. Along this thesis, all solutions were evaluated and validated with extensive experiments using real-world data sets, and some interesting engineering insights were derived.

A state-of-the-art presentation of optimum spatio-temporal sampling design - bridging classic ideas with modern statistical modeling concepts and the latest computational methods. Spatio-temporal Design presents a comprehensive state-of-the-art presentation combining both classical and modern treatments of network design and planning for spatial and spatio-temporal data acquisition. A common problem set is interwoven throughout the chapters, providing various perspectives to illustrate a complete insight to the problem at hand. Motivated by the high demand for statistical analysis of data that takes spatial and spatio-temporal information into account, this book incorporates ideas from the areas of time series, spatial statistics and stochastic processes, and combines them to discuss optimum spatio-temporal sampling design. Spatio-temporal Design: Advances in Efficient Data Acquisition: Provides an up-to-date account of how to collect space-time data for monitoring, with a focus on statistical aspects and the latest computational methods Discusses basic methods and distinguishes between design and model-based approaches to collecting space-time data. Features model-based frequentist design for univariate and multivariate geostatistics, and second-phase spatial sampling. Integrates common data examples and case studies throughout the book in order to demonstrate the different approaches and their integration. Includes real data sets, data generating mechanisms and simulation scenarios. Accompanied by a supporting website featuring R code. Spatio-temporal Design presents an excellent book for graduate level students as well as a valuable reference for researchers and practitioners in the fields of applied mathematics, engineering, and the environmental and health sciences.

Social network analysis applications have experienced tremendous advances within the last few years due in part to increasing trends towards users interacting with each other on the internet. Social networks are organized as graphs, and the data on social networks takes on the form of massive streams, which are mined for a variety of purposes. Social Network Data Analytics covers an important niche in the social network analytics field. This edited volume, contributed by prominent researchers in this field, presents a wide selection of topics on social network data mining such as Structural Properties of Social Networks, Algorithms for Structural Discovery of Social Networks and Content Analysis in Social Networks. This book is also unique in focussing on the data analytical aspects of social networks in the internet scenario, rather than the traditional sociology-driven emphasis prevalent in the existing books, which do not focus on the unique data-intensive characteristics of online social networks. Emphasis is placed on simplifying the content so that students and practitioners benefit from this book. This book targets advanced level students and researchers concentrating on computer science as a secondary text or reference book. Data mining, database, information security, electronic commerce and machine learning professionals will find this book a valuable asset, as well as primary associations such as ACM, IEEE and Management Science.
