Psychophysical studies of the processes underlying relative localization in human vision were conducted. Specifically, the focus of this granting period was characterizing the spatial characteristics of the units that encode spatial location. Evidence was found for a higher-order scaled representation of position in which the size of position integration areas scales with the distance being encoded. This scaling of the position integration areas was found to account well for the increase in separation discrimination thresholds with increasing separation. The position integration areas were shown not to integrate luminance, but were shown to depend on an initial spatial organization of the scene. The time course of the position integration was also investigated. Additional studies investigated the relationship between position integration and the Muller-Lyer illusion, and the effect of the spatial frequency of a masking stimulus (presented at termination of the separation discrimination stimulus) on separation discrimination thresholds.

The spatial and temporal characteristics of human visual localization are studied using psychophysical techniques. The primary tasks studied are frequency discrimination and distance judgments in the plane perpendicular o the observer's line of sight. It is found that these tasks cannot be performed directly on the basis of simple transformations of the retinal image, but depend on stimulus context and on judgment of stimulus depth. Experiments are designed to isolate the process underlying these distance and size judgments from more distal visual processes. One prominent finding is that the localization process is remarkably insensitive to those aspects of the stimulus that most affect contrast detection thresholds. Keywords: Human vision; Visual psychophysics; Visual spatial localization.

The main thrust of this research effort has been investigation of the spatial and temporal properties of the visual processes underlying relative spatial localization by human observers. The initial tasks were development of a suitable laboratory display system for generating the required stimuli, and development of appropriate experimental paradigns for studying the localization of widely separated objects. The second task was to make careful quantitative measurements of the spatial and temporal properties of the system underlying localization of widely separated objects. It was found that many of the stimulus manipulations that are critical in determination of contrast detection thresholds have little or no effect on localization accuracy. The relative localization of widely separated objects is a highly robust visual ability. Those variations in localization accuracy with changes in the spatial and temporal parameters of the stimulus that were obtained could readily be modeled as natural extensions of the threshold properties. The final task of this project was testing of existing models of spatial ability that can be accounted for by current models of spatial vision. Specific extensions of the existing model were suggested by the data. Keywords: Human vision; Visual psychophysics; Relative spatial localization.

Human action understanding from videos is one of the foremost challenges in computer vision. It is the cornerstone of many applications like human-computer interaction and automatic surveillance. The current state of the art methods for action recognition and localization mostly rely on Deep Learning. In spite of their strong performance, Deep Learning approaches require a huge amount of labeled training data. Furthermore, standard action recognition pipelines rely on independent optical flow estimators which increase their computational cost. We propose two approaches to improve these aspects. First, we develop a novel method for efficient, real-time action localization in videos that achieves performance on par or better than other more computationally expensive methods. Second, we present a self-supervised learning approach for spatiotemporal feature learning that does not require any annotations. We demonstrate that features learned by our method provide a very strong prior for the downstream task of action recognition.
