The papers in this volume analyze the language situation under globalization in several European countries. How does the spread of Global English affect the integrity of the local systems? Changes in lexical and discursive repertories are evidenced and discussed. It is shown how new social identities are linguistically constructed and redefined in the social consciousness of the various local communities. The authors see globalization as a major change-in-progress that sets in relief the dual capacity of language: communication and identification. The collection reconciles empirical data analysis with profound attention to a host of theoretical issues, such as a new ecology for language under globalization or a new interdiscursivity of globalizing communications. It is argued that globalization-as-recontextualization of meanings poses a serious challenge for a new science of language. The spatial imagery of center-margin is chosen to expound on the complex interaction between the global and the local. The concept of a glocal view on language affords a new perspective for coping with massive linguistic change.

The ancient book of Ruth speaks into today's world with astonishing relevance. In four short episodes, readers encounter refugees, undocumented immigrants, poverty, hunger, women's rights, male power and privilege, discrimination, and injustice. In Finding God in the Margins, Carolyn Custis James reveals how the book of Ruth is about God, the questions that surface when life falls apart, and how God reaches into the margins and chooses two totally marginalized women who, in the eyes of the patriarchal culture, are zeros. Against the backdrop of disturbing issues in today's world, this bracing narrative puts on display a radical gospel way of living together as human beings that shouts the Kingdom of God, foreshadows Jesus' gospel, and raises the bar for men and women, then and now.

This paper is concerned with the issues involved in labelling as ' marginalised' a particular itinerant group, the Showmens Guild of Australasia. The heterogeneity of the group being described is revealed, as well as the political, economic, and social tactics in which show people engage to gain access to what they perceive as cultural capital while retaining their distinctive identity. The paper concludes by considering the implications of this situation for both educational programs designed for disadvantaged groups and future stages of this research project.
