In late medieval Catholicism, mourners employed an array of practices to maintain connection with the deceased—most crucially, the belief in purgatory, a middle place between heaven and hell where souls could be helped by the actions of the living. In the early sixteenth century, the Reformation abolished purgatory, as its leaders did not want attention to the dead diminishing people's devotion to God. But while the Reformation was supposed to end communication between the living and dead, it turns out the result was in fact more complicated than historians have realized. In the three centuries after the Reformation, Protestants imagined continuing relationships with the dead, and the desire for these relations came to form an important—and since neglected—aspect of Protestant belief and practice. In Speaking with the Dead in Early America, historian Erik R. Seeman undertakes a 300-year history of Protestant communication with the dead. Seeman chronicles the story of Protestants' relationships with the deceased from Elizabethan England to puritan New England and then on through the American Enlightenment into the middle of the nineteenth century with the explosion of interest in Spiritualism. He brings together a wide range of sources to uncover the beliefs and practices of both ordinary people, especially women, and religious leaders. This prodigious research reveals how sermons, elegies, and epitaphs portrayed the dead as speaking or being spoken to, how ghost stories and Gothic fiction depicted a permeable boundary between this world and the next, and how parlor songs and funeral hymns encouraged singers to imagine communication with the dead. Speaking with the Dead in Early America thus boldly reinterprets Protestantism as a religion in which the dead played a central role.

Talking To The Dead And Other Stories written by Sylvia Watanabe and has been published by Doubleday Books this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1992 with Hawaii categories.

"In an O. Henry Award-winning story, set in a village on Hawaii's Lahaina coast, Aunty Talking to the Dead patiently teaches her young apprentice how best to still the soul of a passing spirit. Minerva, tap dancer extraordinaire--"the Orient's answer to Fred Astaire"--looks for long-lost stardust among the ghosts in a renovated rooming house called the Bachelor Palms. Sachi and Meg, two little girls with dress-up clothes and fancy airs, shyly taste the anticipated glamour of adulthood on a country-club dance floor. Little Grandma stitches the secrets of family and neighbors into quilts of resplendent glory, while Aunt Pearlie and the Buddhist Mission Ladies Auxiliary keep vigilant watch for the phantom Laundry Burglar. And a cherished only son considers the options of Canada, Vietnam, and Lulu, a wild young woman with a penchant for wanderlust, while his father struggles with recollections of his own wartime terrors and his mother slips excerpts from the Diamond Sutra written on tiny strips of rice paper into the evening meal." "These are but a few of the inventive characters we meet in this honest and moving collection of interrelated stories. Their tales are spoken in a true host of voices, savvy guides to a world at once ancient and modern, through the mine-fields of adolescence, betrayal, madness, racism, and found and failed beliefs, where the marvelous and the real hold hands." "Brilliant and evocatively rendered, the stories in Talking to the Dead are beautifully layered, poignant, and affectionately humorous. Continuing in the rich tradition of Amy Tan's The Joy Luck Club and Gloria Naylor's The Women of Brewster Place, Sylvia Watanabe creates with power and sympathy a wholecloth sense of time and place that is remarkably unforgettable."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Barbara Weisberg’s Talking to the Dead blends biography and social history in this revelatory story of the family responsible for the rise of Spiritualism. A fascinating story of spirits and conjurors, skeptics and converts in the second half of nineteenth century America viewed through the lives of Kate and Maggie Fox, the sisters whose purported communication with the dead gave rise to the Spiritualism movement—and whose recanting forty years later is still shrouded in mystery. In March of 1848, Kate and Maggie Fox—sisters aged eleven and fourteen—anxiously reported to a neighbor that they had been hearing strange, unidentified sounds in their house. From a sequence of knocks and rattles translated by the young girls as a "voice from beyond," the Modern Spiritualism movement was born. Talking to the Dead follows the fascinating story of the two girls who were catapulted into an odd limelight after communicating with spirits that March night. Within a few years, tens of thousands of Americans were flocking to séances. An international movement followed. Yet thirty years after those first knocks, the sisters shocked the country by denying they had ever contacted spirits. Shortly after, the sisters once again changed their story and reaffirmed their belief in the spirit world. Weisberg traces not only the lives of the Fox sisters and their family (including their mysterious Svengali–like sister Leah) but also the social, religious, economic and political climates that provided the breeding ground for the movement. While this is a thorough, compelling overview of a potent time in US history, it is also an incredible ghost story.

Recounts one woman's discovery of her ability to heal through contact with spirits and reveals how others can awaken this same gift in their own lives • Explains how reconnecting with our inner sense of joy is the first step in healing • Shows how to rid our life of the traumas from the past that hinder our spiritual development, including unresolved traumas from past lives • Provides a roadmap that others can use for rediscovering their own connections to the spirit world Like many others who have discovered that they have a healing vocation, Alexandra Leclere began meeting with other healers and shamans to learn how to put her gift to use. At one of these gatherings she was shocked to find that she was the only one who could see the spirit of a deceased woman that was being honored there--a sign that marked the beginning of a remarkable adventure that taught her how to use her gift for healing herself and others. Despite the extraordinary powers of clairsentience and clairvoyance revealed to her through her work with the spirit world, Alexandra Leclere shows that the greatest gift she has received since her shamanic awakening is the ability to experience unconditional joy. Often the pain caused by unresolved psychological traumas from the past--including past lives--is the key obstacle restricting access to the powers offered by the spirits. The first step in healing requires reconnecting with the joy that resides within us. Once this connection has been established, we are all capable of restoring our connection to the spirit world. Alexandra Leclere’s story provides a roadmap for finding our way back.
