Elite units have long been prominent in the armies of South-East Asia and, given the turmoil in the region since the 1960s, these forces have had ample opportunity to be tested in combat. Acknowledged expert on South-East Asia Ken Conboy outlines the history, organization and insignia of Vietnamese, Cambodian, Indonesian, Malaysian and various other South-East Asian special forces from their origins up until the late 80s, covering such groups as the Vietnamese Luc Luong Dac Biet ('Special Forces') and Lien Doi Ngoui Nhia underwater demolition team and the Cambodian Airborne Brigade Group.

"THE GREEN BERET . . . A SYMBOL OF EXCELLENCE, A MARK OF DISTINCTION, AND A BADGE OF COURAGE." Though engaged in the United States' longest and most controversial military action, the Green Berets rose above the fray to establish an awesome reputation based on their extraordinary skill, discipline, bravery, and sacrifice. Now, with access to information declassified for the very first time, Shelby Stanton--author, military historian, Green Beret, and Vietnam vet--presents the first and most authoritative, comprehensive, and detailed battlefield history of Special Forces in the Vietnam War. Making use of firsthand combat interviews, original records, and his own Special Forces experience, Stanton presents a vivid, unvarnished, and thoroughly researched account of one of the best and most highly decorated special-operations units ever. Here are the real stories behind the legends of combat valor and battlefield success forged by U.S. Army Special Forces during more than a decade of fighting in the tropical swamps and deep jungles of Southeast Asia. This RAND report examines the U.S. Army role in Southeast Asia. Under current benign conditions, efforts should focus on supporting defense reform, addressing transnational threats, and balancing China. If the outlook deteriorates, the United States should increase security cooperation, conclude new regional basing agreements, expand disaster assistance, and create policies to encourage risk-averse Chinese behavior.

“A rare insider’s experience paired with a scholarly historical approach, making it an essential standout for any military library.” —Midwest Book Review More than 8.7 million Americans reported for military duty in Southeast Asia, but only a select few wore the Green Beret, the distinctive symbol of the U.S. Army Special Forces. These elite soldiers played a crucial role during the protracted conflict. Special Forces at War: an Illustrated History, Southeast Asia 1957–1975 by wartime veteran and military historian Shelby L. Stanton shows Special Forces’ activity from the first deployments of Green Berets into battle, through their training, wartime advisory, border surveillance, strike force, and special operations roles. Unprecedented in scope, this photographic history features rare and unpublished images, providing an exclusive, insider view of covert activities such as Project Delta, whose Special Forces-trained Vietnamese commandos posed as North Vietnamese Army or Viet Cong troops behind communist lines. It depicts Special Forces’ camps before, during, and after enemy assaults. It features an array of lethal weapons used by resourceful Green Berets fighting to preserve their remote outposts, as well as allied and enemy documents and propaganda. From ordinary camp life to special missions, no aspect of Special Forces activities during the Second Indochina War has been overlooked. Stanton knows his subject first hand. During six years of active duty as an infantry officer in the U.S. Army, he served as a paratrooper platoon leader, an airborne ranger advisor to the Royal Thai Army Special Warfare Center, and a Special Forces long-range reconnaissance team commander in Southeast Asia before being wounded in combat in Nam Yu, Laos.

We Few written by Nick Brokhausen and has been published by Open Road Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-04-03 with History categories.

A Green Beret’s gripping memoir of American Special Forces in Southeast Asia during the Vietnam War. In 1970, on his second tour to Vietnam, Nick Brokhausen served in Recon Team Habu, CCN. Officially, it was known as the Studies and Observations group. In fact, this Special Forces squad, which Brokhausen calls “an unwashed, profane, ribald, joyously alive fraternity,” undertook some of the most dangerous and suicidal reconnaissance missions ever in the enemy-controlled territory of Cambodia and Laos. But they didn’t infiltrate the jungles alone. They fought alongside the Montagnards—oppressed minorities from the mountain highlands, trained by the US military in guerilla tactics, armed, accustomed to the wild, and fully engaged in a war against the North Vietnamese. Together this small unit formed the backbone of ground reconnaissance in the Republic of Vietnam, racking up medals for valor—but at a terrible cost. “In colorful, military-jargon-laced prose leavened by gallows humor, Brokhausen pulls few punches describing what it was like to navigate remote jungle terrain under the constant threat of enemy fire. A smartly written, insider’s view of one rarely seen Vietnam War battleground.” —Booklist “[An] exceptionally raw look at the Vietnam War just at the apex of its unpopularity. . . . This battle-scarred memoir is an excellent tribute to the generation that fought, laughed, and died in Southeast Asia.” —New York Journal of Books

Surrounded by larger and more populous nations in the heart of the Muslim Malay world, Singapore has been acutely aware of its vulnerability since separating from the Malaysian federation in 1965. Singapore's government has met its defense needs with characteristic determination, building powerful, well-equipped and highly-trained armed forces based on a relatively small professional core and much larger numbers of conscript and reservist citizen soldiers.

The killing part is the easy bit; the tricky part is finding the right people to kill. Rob was a Special Forces operator with some of the world finest regiments and served in four national armies over a career that has spanned forty years and continues today. In 1965 he earned the converted Green Beret as a member of 2 Commando Australia. He left in 1968 to Southeast Asia. Finding work of a military nature in Laos, (in the war that never was). The end of the contract found him in England where he joined the British Parachute Regiment and completed three tours in Northern Ireland at the height of the troubles, taking part in Operation Demetrius. On his last tour, he was detached from his battalion and worked covert operations with a little-known group called the MRF (Military Reaction Force). 1974 saw Rob in Rhodesia as a member of the internationally acclaimed C Squadron SAS, where he was wounded on operations twice. This was a turning point in Rob’s life as he surrendered to Christ becoming a Christian. He was to carry on as an operator, but now with a biblical world view. Rob was recruited in 1980 by the South African Defense Force and was a member of 6 Reconnaissance Commando Special Forces and later became an operative with what was commonly called ‘the funnies’ or CSI Chief of Staff Intelligence. From 1996 to 2007 Rob was in South Sudan and Iraq, receiving a letter of commendation from the United States Army. Still active today, Rob specializes in close protection and tactical security training for civilian personnel.
