The fashion industry has not traditionally been associated with definitions of sustainable development and sustainability. The social and environmental challenges faced by the fashion industry concern the entire supply and demand chain, propped up by a throwaway consumer culture. In response to these sustainability challenges, some fashion companies have developed innovative social and environmental initiatives. While many of these initiatives are sympathetic, resourceful and hold real potential for generating social and environmental improvements, greater scale and scope is needed in order to bring about a more fundamental shift in current practices. This Special Issue of the Journal of Corporate Citizenship explores how sustainability can be a driver for exploring new business models within a single industrial setting, highlighting some of the sustainability initiatives that bring hope for a more sustainable future. New Business Models for Sustainable Fashion is a must-read for researchers and practitioners tackling the challenges of an industry in need of large-scale transformation.

This dissertation approaches the question of sustainability and its influence on company performance, with special focus on the manufacturing industry. In the contemporary production environment, manufacturing operations must take into account not only profit, but also environmental and social performance, in order to ensure the long-term development of the company. Companies have to decide whether they should allocate resources to environmental and social practices in order to improve their competitive advantage. Consequently, in decision-making processes concerning operations, it is important for companies to understand how to coordinate profit, people, and planet. The objective of this dissertation was to investigate the current situation regarding manufacturers’ sustainable initiatives, and to explore the relationship between these sustainable practices and companies’ performance, including financial performance, operational performance, innovation performance, environmental performance, and social performance. First of all, a structured literature review was conducted to identify sustainable factors considered to be important in the decision making of manufacturing operations. The findings were synthesized into a conceptual model, which was then adopted as the basis for designing the survey instrument used in this dissertation. Drawing on Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) reports, empirical research was performed to explore the relationship between environmental management practices and company performance. Interestingly, the findings showed that many environmental management practices had a strong positive impact on innovation performance. Sustainability disclosures and financial performance were further analyzed using extended data from the GRI reports. The results also showed that several sustainability performance indicators, such as product responsibility, human rights, and society, displayed a significant and positive correlation with return on equity in the sample companies. In order to further explore the research area and to verify these findings, a triangulation approach was adopted and new data were collected via a survey conducted among middle and large sample companies in the Swedish manufacturing industry. The results indicated that the sustainable improvement practices had a positive impact on company performance. Some environmental and social improvement practices had a direct and positive correlation with product and process innovation. Furthermore, findings suggested that better cooperation with suppliers on environmental work could help to strengthen the organizational green capabilities of the focal companies. When considering the company’s general approach to implementing sustainable practices, some interesting findings emerged. There were limited significant differences in sustainable practices when comparing different manufacturing sectors, and different countries and regions. However, the results showed that Swedish manufacturing companies often place higher priority on implementing economic and environmental sustainability practices than on social ones. This dissertation contributes to the literature on manufacturing sustainability. The study expands the understanding of how environmental, social, or economic perspectives as a triple bottom line can influence company performance and to a certain extent the supply chain. Identifying and understanding such relationships gives companies the opportunity to integrate sustainability into their manufacturing operations strategy in order to sustain their manufacturing operations over the long term.

Essay from the year 2002 in the subject Business economics - Miscellaneous, grade: 1.0 (A), University of Dusseldorf "Heinrich Heine" (Department for Economics, Production), course: Strategic Management - a process and its practical implementation, language: English, abstract: This paper is divided in three major parts. In the first one a definition of “sustainable development” and an overview about it’s history and importance will be given before part two (chapter 3) will follow with the consequences and importance sustainable development has for business. In the third part (chapter 4) the author will give an idea how sustainable development and strategic management can be linked. Finally the author will draw a brief conclusion. To have a common understanding throughout the text one of the most popular definition will be given. It’s taken from the report “Our Common Future” published 1987 by the WCED better known as the “Brundtland-Commision”: “Sustainable development is development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. It contains within two key concepts: the concept of needs, in particular the essential needs of the world’s poor, to which overriding priority should be given; and the idea of limitations imposed by the state of technology and social organization on the environment’s ability to meet present and future needs”1 The idea itself is not new and can be found in a lot of cultures e.g. the Indians say “Treat earth well - it is brought from your grandchildren.” The important aspect of having this rather vague definition is that for the first time a definition on an international level was found and widely discussed by governments, NGOs, and the industry.2 1 Wagner, G.R. 1997, S.35 2 compare Matten, D.; Wagner, G.R. The purpose of this Special Issue is to investigate topics related to sustainability issues in the new era, especially in Industry 4.0 or other new manufacturing environments. Under Industry 4.0, there have been great changes with respect to production processes, production planning and control, quality assurance, internal control, cost determination, and other management issues. Moreover, it is expected that Industry 4.0 can create positive sustainability impacts along the whole value chain. There are three pillars of sustainability, including environmental sustainability, economic sustainability, and social sustainability. This Special Issue collects 15 sustainability-related papers from various industries that use various methods or models, such as mathematical programming, activity-based costing (ABC), material flow cost accounting, fuel consumption model, artificial intelligence (AI)-based fusion model, multi-attribute decision model (MADM), and so on. These papers are related to carbon emissions, carbon tax, Industry 4.0, economic sustainability, corporate social responsibility (CSR), etc. The research objects come from China, Taiwan, Thailand, Oman, Cyprus, Germany, Austria, and Portugal. Although the research presented in this Special Issue is not exhaustive, this Special Issue provides abundant, significant research related to environmental, economic, and social sustainability. Nevertheless, there still are many research topics that require our attention to solve problems of sustainability.

There is no bigger challenge for organizational change management in the contemporary world than achieving greater sustainability. The challenges associated with sustainable development are multifaceted, including criteria pertaining to the delivery of environmental, social, ethical and economic results. Creating sustainable value requires companies to address issues that relate to pollution and waste, created by industrialization; to respond in a transparent manner to the challenges increasingly raised by the civil society, namely NGOs; to invest in emerging technologies that provide innovative solutions to many of today’s environmental problems; and to effectively respond to the challenges of increased poverty and inequality around the globe. On the other hand, to create shareholder value, managers must focus not only on cost reduction and risk control, but also on fostering innovation, enhancing corporate reputation within external stakeholders, and establishing a credible growth path for the future. The current global financial crisis has left few untouched: unprecedented unemployment figures, public deficits, bankruptcies, redundancies, austerity regimes, and governments bailing out banks all over the globe. World confidence is at a record low. How can management scholars encounter solutions for the dilemmas created by this scenario of change in which they can manage to change sustainably? This book provides some answers to these pressing questions. This book was originally published as a special issue of the Journal of Change Management.
