This study examines the Old English poems by Cynewulf and those of the Cynewulf canon in comparison both to their probable sources and to their analogues in other European vernacular languages. With the exception of the Old English poems, the various versions are remarkably similar to each other even in the most minute points of diction. Although the phraseology of the Old English poems is often close to that of the Latin sources, there are differences that lie in the elements that derive from the oral-formulaic tradition. Because direct discourse is the focus of the Cynewulfian poems, the study focuses on speech acts, showing that the poets replaced simple verbs with formulaic language that conveys their ideas emotionally as well as intellectually. While recounting stories drawn from the Graeco-Latin Christian tradition in the poetic form inherited from the Germanic tradition, the poets composed works of high literary artistry. Indeed, they are literary artists concerned with the quality and effectiveness of their poetry.

A Key To Old Poems written by Alain Renoir and has been published by Penn State University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1988 with Foreign Language Study categories.

This book examines the fundamental principles whereby the tradition of Indo-European oral-formulaic composition provides a context for the critical interpretation of certain kinds of English and German Medieval poetry. Renoir's purpose is to apply the rapidly increasing amount of original and far-reaching research in oral-formulaic theory and tradition to the critical interpretation of poetry. He concentrates on works of recognized literary merit, such as Beowulf and the Hildebrandslied, primarily because the book is aimed at English speakers--and the examination of major poems drawn from early English and immediately related cultures is more relevant to this audience--and because a preponderance of the masterpieces of oral-formulaic composition that have survived are in the West-Germanic tradition. In contrast to many oral-formulaic investigations, this study is primarily concerned with the literary quality of the materials examined. It is addressed to all scholars concerned with Medieval English poetry and its roots, scholars concerned with Germanic philology and oral-formulaic matters, and scholars concerned with literary interpretation in general. Further, it has considerable potential for use by students and in the classrooms.

Two original essays and 16 published since 1950 offer a comprehensive view of Cynewulf, his language, and his poetry. The collection contains important new statements on dates, provenance, and canon by R.D. Fulk and Patrick W. Conner, four influential essays that thoroughly explore Cynewulf's runic signature and poetic style, and major contributions to our understanding of the four signed poems of Cynewulf, Fates of the Apostles, Christ II, Juliana, and Elene. Three essays are devoted to each of these poems, and the essays themselves exemplify a broad range of approaches to this highly elusive Anglo-Saxon poet. The volume complements existing book-length treatments of the subject and will be welcome to scholars and students who need the foundations of Cynewulf scholarship at their fingertips.

This study outlines the history and anatomy of the European apology tradition from the sixth century BCE to 1500 for the first time. The study examines the vernacular and Latin tales, lyrics, epics, and prose compositions of Arabic, English, French, German, Greek, Icelandic, Italian, Spanish, and Welsh authors. Three different strands of the apology tradition can be proposed. The first and most pervasive strand features apologies to pagan deities and-later-to God. The second most important strand contains literary apologies made to an earthly audience, usually of women. A third strand occurs more rarely and contains apologies for varying literary offenses that are directed to a more general audience. The medieval theory of language privileges an imitation of the Christian master narrative and a hierarchical medieval view of authorship. These notions express a medieval philosophical concern about language and its role, and therefore the role of the author, in cosmic history. Despite the fact that women apologize for different purposes and reasons, their examples illustrate, on yet another level, the antifeminist subtext inherent in the entire apology tradition. Overall, the apology tradition characterized by interauctoriality, intertextuality, and intratextuality, enables self-critical authors to refer not only backward but also-primarily-forward, making the medieval apology a progressive strategy that engenders new literature. This study would be relevant to all medievalists, especially those interested in literature and the history of ideas.

Traditional Oral Epic written by John Miles Foley and has been published by Univ of California Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2023-07-28 with Literary Criticism categories.

John Miles Foley offers an innovative and straightforward approach to the structural analysis of oral and oral-derived traditional texts. Professor Foley argues that to give the vast and complex body of oral "literature" its due, we must first come to terms with the endemic heterogeneity of traditional oral epics, with their individual histories, genres, and documents, as well as both the synchronic and diachronic aspects of their poetics. Until now, the emphasis in studies of oral traditional works has been placed on addressing the correspondences among traditions—shared structures of "formula," "theme," and "story-pattern." Traditional Oral Epic explores the incongruencies among traditions and focuses on the qualities specific to certain oral and oral-derived works. It is certain to inspire further research in this field.
