The surprising history of how Americans have fought over the meaning and legacy of the Revolution for nearly two and a half centuries Americans agree that their nation’s origins lie in the Revolution, but they have never agreed on what the Revolution meant. For nearly two hundred and fifty years, politicians, political parties, social movements, and a diverse array of ordinary Americans have constantly reimagined the Revolution to fit the times and suit their own agendas. In this sweeping take on American history, Michael D. Hattem reveals how conflicts over the meaning and legacy of the Revolution—including the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution—have influenced the most important events and tumultuous periods in the nation’s history; how African Americans, women, and other oppressed groups have shaped the popular memory of the Revolution; and how much of our contemporary memory of the Revolution is a product of the Cold War. By exploring the Revolution’s unique role in American history as a national origin myth, Hattem shows how the meaning of the Revolution has never been fixed, how remembering the nation’s founding has often done far more to divide Americans than to unite them, and how revising the past is an important and long‑standing American political tradition.

Luke is here presented as contributing to New Testament Christology through his treatment of Old Testament Christological texts. This redaction-critical study argues that Luke's use of the Old Testament is not so much a 'proof from prophecy' as a 'proclamation' that draws both upon prophecies and upon patterns. This proclamation as it is developed in Luke-Acts serves to turn the reader's attention from seeing Jesus as Messiah to seeing him eventually as Lord.

This book traces the evolution of the speechwriting process for presidents in the White House from the administration of Franklin Roosevelt to the present. While institutionalization of the speechwriting process has often been blamed for bland presidential rhetoric, this book draws out the many varied consequences of institutionalization on the speechwriting process. Ultimately, it concludes that the institutionalization of the process has actually served the presidency well by helping presidents avoid the adverse effects of poorly chosen words.

Speech in Speech explores the techniques by which Classical Greek texts written primarily for public performance weave in direct quotations (oratio recta) of "other voices"-imagined or real. This "speech in speech" is usually perceived as endowed with a greater vividness and authenticity than indirect quotation, even when the words report what someone might say, or enliven the verbal texture of plays and speeches, and examines the intricate relation of direct quotations to their "originals". As the first synoptic and detailed study of oratio recta in Classical Greek literature, Speech in Speech will be useful to anyone interested in ancient literary technique.

Persons In Communion written by Alan Torrance and has been published by A&C Black this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1996-03-01 with Religion categories.

Dr Alan Torrance here seeks to outline the structure of human participation in the triune life which is conceived as the essential context for the articulation of God in human language. The three areas of focus concern firstly, the question of the propriety, or otherwise, of describing the 'members' of the Trinity as 'persons', secondly, the broader question of how language functions in describing God in such terms, and thirdly, the more fundamental question of the underlying models which shape our theological perspective. The different approaches to the question of triune personhood representative of the modern ecumenical debate are examined, engaging with theologians such as Karl Barth, Karl Rahner, John Zizioulas, Catherine Mowry LaCugna, Eberhard Jungel and Jurgen Moltmann. The primary intention throughout is to address the critical methodological issues which these debates raise. This leads to a series of conclusions as to the nature of trinitarian description (analogy, metaphor), the model of the theological enterprise that must serve and underlie it, and finally, the necessity of a proper appreciation of the relationship between 'semantic' and 'doxological' participation. Through this examination, Alan Torrance seeks to balance Karl Barth's 'revelation model' by seeing worship as the true context for trinitarian theology.
