Der Begriff Kipppunkte oder auch das englische »tipping points« taucht immer häufger in den Nachrichten rund um die Klimakrise auf. Gemeint ist damit, dass ein bis dahin stabiles System quasi schlagartig in einen anderen Zustand wechselt. Dahinter steckt, dass Systeme äußere Störungen der inneren Stabilität bis zu diesem Punkt ab-federn können – doch ist diese Pufferfähigkeit erschöpft, erfolgt der Wechsel, und zwar irreversibel. Solche Kipppunkte existieren nicht nur in natürlichen Ökosystemen wie dem Regenwald, selbst wenn sie in diesem Zusammenhang vielleicht am bekanntesten sind. Sie treten auch in der unbelebten Natur wie beispielsweise bei der Stabilität von Gletschern auf. Und der Begriff wird inzwischen auch verwendet, wenn gesellschaftliche Umstürze das Leben auf den Kopf stellen, nicht selten im Zu-sammenhang mit verheerenden Umweltbedingungen.

Bis dahin, so fordert das deutsche Klimaschutzgesetz, soll »Treibhausgasneutralität« herrschen, griffiger oft als Klimaneutralität bezeichnet: Es darf nur so viel emittiert werden, wie andernorts wieder gebunden wird, in welcher Form oder mit welcher Technologie auch immer. Verfolgt man jedoch aktuelle politische Diskussionen, scheint dieses Ziel in weite Ferne zu rücken, denn wie der Weg dorthin aussehen könnte, darüber herrscht maximaler Dissens. Die Rückmeldungen aus der Wissenschaft sind jedoch klar: Jeder weitere Aufschub wird die notwendigen Maßnahmen noch schwieriger und aufwändiger machen – und manches, was jetzt noch zu retten wäre, unwiederbringlich zerstören. Nicht umsonst hatte sich die internationale Staatengemeinschaft bereits 2015 in Paris auf ein Klimaabkommen geeinigt. Und angesichts der mageren Fortschritte warnen Fachleute dringend davor, dass uns die Zeit davonläuft.

Dabei benötigen wir alte und junge Wälder, um die Artenvielfalt zu bewahren und den Klimawandel zumindest einzudämmen. Nature provides us with many services seemingly for free: recharged groundwater, fertile soil and plant biomass created by photosynthesis. We human beings draw extensive benefits from these “ecosystem services,” or ES – food, water supply, recreation and protection from natural hazards. Major international studies, such as the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment, have addressed the enormous role of biodiversity and ecosystems to human well-being, and they draw particular attention to the consequences resulting from the reduction or loss of these services. These very topical issues are being addressed by authors/scientists in a wide variety of disciplines – and their approaches, terminologies and methodological specifics are just as diverse. What, for example, does the efficacy of nature or natural capital mean? Which values of nature are particularly important, how are they distributed in space and time and how can they be assessed and the relevant knowledge promoted? Evolutionary biology has long sought to explain how new traits and new species arise. Darwin maintained that competition is key to understanding this biodiversity and held that selection acting to minimize competition causes competitors to become increasingly different, thereby promoting new traits and new species. Despite Darwin’s emphasis, competition’s role in diversification remains controversial and largely underappreciated. Are animals able to appreciate what humans refer to as “beauty”? The term scarcely ever appears nowadays in a scientific description of living things, but we humans may nonetheless find the colors, patterns, and songs of animals to be beautiful in apparently the same way that we see beauty in works of art. In Animal Beauty, Nobel Prize–winning biologist Christiane Nüsslein-Volhard describes how the colors and patterns displayed by animals arise, what they communicate, and how they function in the social life of animals. Watercolor drawings illustrate these amazing instances of animal beauty. Darwin addressed the topic of ornament in his 1871 book The Descent of Man and Selection in Relation to Sex, and did not hesitate to engage with criteria of beauty, convinced that animals experienced color and ornament as attractive and agreeable in the same way that we do, and that the role this played in mate choice pointed to a “sexual selection” distinct from natural selection. Nüsslein-Volhard examines key examples of ornament and sexual selection in the animal kingdom and lays the groundwork for biological aesthetics. Noting that color patterns have not been a research priority—perhaps because they appeared to be nonessential luxuries rather than functional necessities—Nüsslein-Volhard looks at recent scientific developments on the topic. In part because of Nüsslein-Volhard's own research on the zebrafish, it is now possible to decipher the molecular genetic mechanisms that lead to production of colors in animal skin and its appendages and control its pattern and distribution.
