Zbornik je nastal ob 30. mednarodnem geografskem kongresu, ki je od 15. do 20. avgusta 2004 potekal v Glasgowu na Škotskem. Avtorji so v 26 prispevkih podali razmeroma celovit geografski pregled Slovenije. Po splošnem uvodnem opisu in umestitvi Slovenije v Evropo so prikazane njene naravnogeografske značilnosti, podnebje, vegetacija, prebivalstvo. poselitev in naselja, raba tal, industrija in turizem. Predstavljene so tudi možnosti nadaljnjega razvoja. S tem so mednarodni geografski srenji predstavljene geografske discipline, s katerimi se slovenski geografi najbolj intenzivno ukvarjamo. Knjigo bogatijo številni kakovostni tematski zemljevidi, povedne fotografije in preglednice. Na zadnji platnici je še pregledni zemljevid Republike Slovenije.

"Sinkholes and Subsidence" provides a twenty-first century account of how the various subsidence features in carbonate and evaporite rocks cause problems in development and construction in our living environment. The authors explain the processes by which different types of sinkholes develop and mature in karst terrains. They consider the various methods used in site investigations, both direct and indirect, to locate the features associated with these hazards and risks, highlighting the value of hazard mapping. Various ground improvement techniques and the special types of foundation structures which deal with these problems are covered in the second half of the text. This book is supplemented with a wealth of actual case studies and solutions, written by invited experts.

A Delayed Life is the breathtaking memoir that tells the story of Dita Kraus, the real-life Librarian of Auschwitz. Dita Kraus grew up in Prague in an intellectual, middle-class Jewish family. She went to school, played with her friends, and never thought of herself as being different—until the advent of the Holocaust. Torn from her home, Dita was sent to Auschwitz with her family. From her time in the children’s block of Auschwitz to her liberation from the camps and on into her adulthood, Dita’s powerful memoir sheds light on an incredible life—one that is delayed no longer.

and their identification obviates individual thermochemical studies on every genus. The stability relations among sedimentary carbonate minerals are now more or less well known. The common rock-forming minerals cal cite and dolomite are indeed stable phases in the pertinent systems. Most other carbonate minerals of similar composition which are known to occur in the younger sediments are metastable with respect to calcite, dolomite, and magnesite. This implies that the sedimentation of carbon ates is determined only in part by stability relations. Kinetic factors, which allow the formation of metastable minerals, appear to be more important. Although the diagenetic transformations leading to stable minerals take place by virtue of thermodynamic requirements, the reac tions themselves are triggered by kinetic factors as well. Some of the reactions leading from metastable to stable carbonate assemblages are susceptible to simulation in the laboratory; others (e. g. dolomitization) appear to be so slow that they can be studied only in analogous systems characterized by reasonable reaction rates. In all attempts to explain the possible mechanisms of such reactions, we must consider the crystal structures of the final products as well as of the starting materials. This is another viewpoint from which mineralogy is important to carbonate petrology, if we regard the crystal chemistry of minerals as a part of mineralogy. A certain parallelism with clay mineralogy suggests itself.

V knjigi (Jamski skalni relief in njegov speleogenetski pomen) so strnjena proučevanja o nastanku in razvoju najbolj značilnih jamskih skalnih oblik.

The earlier editions of this book have been used by successivegenerations of students for more than 20 years, and it is thestandard text on the subject in most British universities and manyothers throughout the world. The study of sediments and sedimentary rocks continues to be acore topic in the Earth Sciences and this book aims to provide aconcise account of their composition, mineralogy, textures, structures, diagenesis and depositional environments. This latest edition is noteworthy for the inclusion of 16 plateswith 54 colour photomicrographs of sedimentary rocks inthin-section. These bring sediments to life and show their beautyand colorful appearance down the microscope; they will aid thestudent enormously in laboratory petrographic work. The text hasbeen revised where necessary and the reference and further readinglists brought up-to-date. New tables have been included to helpundergraduates with rock and thin-section description andinterpretation. New 16-page colour section will mean students do not need tobuy Longman Atlas All illustrations redrawn to higher standard Complete revision of text - new material on sedimentarygeochemistry, etc
