Hans Urs von Balthasar war der wohl letzte Theologe, der sich umfassend mit der auf den ersten Blick scheinbar unzeitgemäßen Frage der Hölle auseinandergesetzt hat. Geleitet wird er dabei von der Einsicht, dass der unbedingte Heilswille Gottes als Kerngehalt des christlichen Glaubens hermeneutischer Leitfaden ausnahmslos jeder Theologie sein muss. Unter diesem Vorzeichen erwächst ihm aus trinitätstheologischer Durchdringung der Höllenthematik die Hoffnung auf das Heil aller. Nicht obwohl, sondern gerade indem er die Dimension des Unheilvollen ernst nimmt und auslotet, gelingt es ihm, die göttliche Heilszusage inmitten der Heillosigkeit unserer Welt zur Sprache zu bringen. Die vorliegende Studie widmet sich der Aufgabe, Balthasars Überlegungen zur Hölle aus seiner theologischen Gesamtkonzeption heraus zu entfalten. Um den Reichtum seines Denkens für die Gegenwartstheologie neu fruchtbar zu machen, wird in einem kurzen Ausblick exemplarisch die Chance erwogen, Ansatzpunkte für die Entwicklung einer bislang zu vermissenden Theologie pathologischer Angst zu finden. Dazu wird vorgeschlagen, die balthasarsche Theologie in einen Dialog mit der sich auf die Philosophie Heideggers begründenden daseinsanalytischen Psychopathologie zu stellen. These ist: Krankhafte Angstzustände können als Vorschattungen von Hölle begriffen und in den Horizont einer umfassenden Hoffnung auf Heilsein gestellt werden.
