The present volume advances a recent historiographical turn towards the intersection of early modern philosophy and the life sciences by bringing together many of its leading scholars to present the contributions of important but often neglected figures, such as Ralph Cudworth, Nehemiah Grew, Francis Glisson, Hieronymus Fabricius ab Aquapendente, Georg Ernst Stahl, Juan Gallego de la Serna, Nicholas Hartsoeker, Henry More, as well as more familiar figures such as Descartes, Spinoza, Leibniz, Malebranche, and Kant. The contributions to this volume are organized in accordance with the particular problems that living beings and living nature posed for early modern philosophy: the problem of life in general, whether it constitutes something ontologically distinct at all, or whether it can ultimately be exhaustively comprehended "in the same manner as the rest"; the problem of the structure of living beings, by which we understand not just bare anatomy but also physiological processes such as irritability, motion, digestion, and so on; the problem of generation, which might be included alongside digestion and other vital processes, were it not for the fact that it presented such an exceptional riddle to philosophers since antiquity, namely, the riddle of coming-into-being out of -- apparent or real -- non-being; and, finally, the problem of natural order.

John Dupré explores recent revolutionary developments in biology and considers their relevance for our understanding of human nature and human society. Epigenetics and related areas of molecular biology have eroded the exceptional status of the gene and presented the genome as fully interactive with the rest of the cell. Developmental systems theory provides a space for a vision of evolution that takes full account of the fundamental importance of developmental processes. Dupré shows the importance of microbiology for a proper understanding of the living world, and reveals how it subverts such basic biological assumptions as the organisation of biological kinds on a branching tree of life, and the simple traditional conception of the biological organism. These topics are considered in the context of a view of science as realistically grounded in the natural order, but at the same time as pluralistic and inextricably integrated within a social and normative context. Recently, some anthropological researchers have prioritized the interaction between biology and culture in trying to explain human variation and avoid reductionist views such as the racial worldview. Such scholars refer to this interaction as human biocultural diversity. It is a holistic view that highlights, as Elisa J. Sobo says, “all population-based human variation generated in or reflecting the dynamic, synergistic communion of biology and culture, neither one of which can function without the other.” In this viewpoint, biology and culture co-create each other. But at what point does the cultural become biological? And at what point does the biological become cultural? And how do we bypass dualism in considering the interactive merge? I propose that the Spinozistic view of the human being can help resolve this conundrum, i.e., a rejection of the dualistic notion of body and mind by offering Baruch Spinoza’s monistic view so that body is identical to mind. That is, following Spinoza, biology will be placed under the attribute of Extension and culture under the attribute of Thought, and then argue that biology is one and the same thing as culture as mind and body are the same thing in Spinoza’s Nature (Substance/God). Viewing biocultural anthropology through Spinoza’s philosophy could lead us to our most advantageous well-being in terms of social organization.

The question raised in this book is why Spinoza’s work which comes so close to the modern view of natural science is not prominent in the social sciences. The answer suggested is that this is due to the lingering influence of the Cartesian differentiation between the domain of science, dealing with material bodies in space and time, and the realm of thought to which the mind belongs. Spinoza’s rejection of this mind/body dualism was based on his conviction that the human mind was an essential part of the ‘forces’ which maintain human existence. Since this view fits so well the evolutionary view of life, the book suggests that after Darwin, when this dualism became untenable, it was replaced by a nature versus culture dichotomy. The book examines whether the history of the philosophy of science supports this explanation. The author believes that answering this question is important because of the rising influence of cultural relativism which endangers the very survival of modern science and political stability.
