Spinozas Theorie der Politik blieb lange unbeachtet. Neben schwer auszurottenden Vorurteilen gegen den Autor spielte dabei die Interpretation eine große Rolle, seine beiden politischen Traktate als Gelegenheitsschriften ohne Bezug auf sein philosophisches Hauptwerk, die Ethica, zu betrachten. Wenn man jedoch diese Lehre mit der conatus-These in der Ethica in Verbindung setzt, erkennt man sofort, daß Spinozas Denken auf das genaue Gegenteil hinausläuft: Wer den Begriff des Rechts durch den der physischen Gewalt ersetzen und alles nur unter Anwendung der Gewalt unter Kontrolle bringen will, setzt damit den Staat einer prinzipiellen Instabilität aus, die dieser nie überwinden kann. Denn das Naturrecht auf die freie Selbstbestimmung, das jeder Mensch als Modus Gottes der göttlichen Macht verdankt, ist gewiß noch kein Recht als Gegenstand der positiven Gesetzgebung, muß aber trotzdem in jeder Rechts- und Staatsverfassung berücksichtigt werden, weil es zu derjenigen Grundbestimmung des Menschen gehört, die - langfristig gesehen - weder physische Gewalt noch beliebige Normen manipulieren können. In der vorliegenden Schrift wird versucht, diese in der Rezeptions- und Interpretationsgeschichte vergessene bzw. mißverstandene Gebundenheit der Theorie der Politik Spinozas an seine metaphysisch-anthropologischen Voraussetzungen darzustellen, indem auf Vernunft und Affektivität als Schlüsselbegriffe aufmerksam gemacht wird, die sein ganzes Denken prägen.

Es ist wohl wahr, daß Spinoza den Menschen als Teil der Natur bestimmt, aber es ist nicht wahr, daß er ihn deshalb als unselbständigen Teil einer Natur im Ganzen begreift. Die vorschnelle, aber verbreitete Meinung, Spinozas Philosophie sei als ein auf den Monismus der Substanz gegründetes deduktives System zu verstehen, beruht auf einer Fehldeutung seines Hauptwerkes, der Ethik. Sie ist vielmehr durch einen Perspektiven-Dualismus gekennzeichnet, der einen doppelten Ausgangspunkt hat: den Ausgang von Gott und den Ausgang vom Menschen. Der diese beiden Glieder verknüpfende Grundgedanke ist der einer durchgängigen Rationalität der Welt; dies ist ein eminent auf den Menschen bezogener Gedanke, da die Begreifbarkeit der Welt nur für ein Wesen von Interesse ist, das zu begreifen vermag. So notwendig Spinoza seiner Ethik die Theorie der Substanz voranstellen muß, so notwendig ist seine Philosophie andererseits eine Theorie des Menschen: der Mensch ist das ausgezeichnete endliche Wesen, das im Akt des Erkennens aus eigenem Können sein eigenes Sein bewahrt, d.h. seine Freiheit erfährt. - Diese These wird in der Vielfalt der Aspekte präsentiert und auf ihren Ertrag für eine Theorie des welthaft existierenden Menschen überprüft.

Doing so, the book defends a realist rationalist interpretation of Spinoza's approach which does not entail commitment to an ontological reduction of subjective experience to mere intelligibility. In contrast to a long-standing tradition of Hegelian reading of Spinoza's Ethics, it thus defends the notion that the experience of finite subjects is fully real.

Potentials play an important role not only in our everyday understanding of objects, persons and systems but also in the sciences. An example is the potential to become an adult human person. Moreover, the attribution of potentials involves crucial ethical problems. Bioethics makes references to the theoretical concept "potential" without being able to clarify its meaning. However, despite its relevance it has not been made subject of philosophical investigation. Mostly, potentials are regarded as a subspecies of dispositions. Whilst dispositions are a flourishing field of research, potentials as such have not come into focus. Potentials like dispositions are modal properties. Therefore, potentials involve a time structure of the entities in question that is much more complex than those of dispositions.
