This landmark book combines the voices of Native Americans and non-Indians, anthropologists and others, in an exploration of gender and sexuality issues as they relate to lesbian, gay, transgendered, and other "marked" Native Americans. Focusing on the concept of two-spirit people--individuals not necessarily gay or lesbian, transvestite or bisexual, but whose behaviors or beliefs may sometimes be interpreted by others as uncharacteristic of their sex--this book is the first to provide an intimate look at how many two-spirit people feel about themselves, how other Native Americans treat them, and how anthropologists and other scholars interpret them and their cultures. 1997 Winner of the Ruth Benedict Prize for an edited book given by the Society of Lesbian and Gay Anthropologists.

In leading the young people, there are two indispensable aspects: spiritual knowledge and spiritual life. The spiritual content we impart into our young people must be related to both aspects, and we should not lean too much toward one or the other; we must be balanced. According to God’s law in the universe, everything is balanced. Thus, in our service with the young brothers and sisters, we should keep the principle of being balanced; we should give the young people knowledge and life in such a way that these aspects interact with each other.

The authors, both senior Birrpai men, begin by describing the traditional culture, law and way of life of the Birrpai people whose lands stretched from the Hastings River district southwards to beyond the Manning River. The arrival of a large group of white men in the region in 1818, when John Oxley and his party trespassed into the Hastings Valley and followed the river to its mouth at the place Oxley named Port Macquarie, was the trigger for catastrophic impact on Birrpai society. In 1821 a penal colony was established at Port Macquarie, leading to years of complex interactions between the Birrpai, the militia and convicts; sometimes hostile, sometimes seeking forms of accommodation. After the colonial government provided free settlers with access to Birrpai lands in 1830, interactions became even more complex, and the Birrpai were increasingly dispossessed of their lands while still attempting to maintain their traditions and autonomy. The establishment of the Aboriginal Protection Board in 1882 heralded official policies of segregation, with many Birrpai forced onto reserves with their own black schools, whilst being denied many of the basic rights enjoyed by whites. Others amongst the Birrpai overtly fought to maintain their rights to their lore and lands. Over the following decades, State and National policies towards Indigenous people transformed from segregation to integration. The policy of assimilation was largely adopted by the Commonwealth in 1938, the year in which Indigenous leaders declared 26 January as a Day of Mourning. In the 1960s the fight for social justice stepped up and after the 1967 Referendum was overwhelmingly passed, further reforms were made, leading, after a long struggle, to the passage of Land Rights legislation and forms of self-determination. The book examines the impact of all these changes on the Birrpai people, the moves towards recognition and reconciliation, and ends by looking ahead at what still needs to be done to remedy the remaining and seemingly intractable issues of social and restorative justice, and the resultant social and cultural disadvantages suffered by First Peoples throughout Australia.

There are several historical accounts of the Treaty 7 agreement between the government and prairie First Nations but none from the perspective of the aboriginal people involved. In spite of their perceived silence, however, the elders of each nation involved have maintained an oral history of events, passing on from generation to generation many stories about the circumstances surrounding Treaty 7 and the subsequent administration of the agreement. The True Spirit and Original Intent of Treaty 7 gathers the "collective memory" of the elders about Treaty 7 to provide unique insights into a crucial historical event and the complex ways of the aboriginal people.

Urban Indigenous Youth Reframing Two Spirit written by Marie Laing and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-03-15 with Education categories.

This book offers insights from young trans, queer, and two-spirit Indigenous people in Toronto who examine the breadth and depth of meanings that two-spirit holds. Tracing the refusals and desires of these youth and their communities, Urban Indigenous Youth Reframing Two-Spirit expands critical conversations on queerness, Indigeneity, and community and simultaneously troubles the idea that articulating a definition of two-spirit is a worthwhile undertaking. Beyond the expansion of these conversations, this book also seeks to empower community members, educators, and young people — both Indigenous and non-Indigenous — to better support the self-determination of trans, queer, and two-spirit Indigenous youth. By including a research zine and community discussion guidelines, Laing demonstrates the possibility of powerful change that comes from Indigenous people creating spaces to share knowledge with one another.

To Live in the Spirit: Paul and the Spirit of God brings to light a fresh understanding of the Greek concept πνεῦμα (spirit) in Paul’s ethical teaching. Placing Paul and his mixed audience within the Hellenistic Jewish and Greek (philosophical) traditions of the ancient world, this book examines his new message concerning πνεῦμα’s primary function in the acquisition of virtues and avoidance of vices. Looking in detail at the various ways in which Paul views πνεῦμα in his seven undisputed letters, Naveros Córdova explores πνεῦμα’s development from Paul’s initial ethical reflections in his early letters to a more mature view in his later letters. Naveros Córdova argues that it is within these traditions, represented by major Hellenistic Jewish and Greco-Roman writers, that Paul construes the framework of his ethical teaching. Paul finds in the power of God’s πνεῦμα a new ethical alternative for his mixed audience to living lives pleasing to God outside the observance of the Mosaic Law. Naveros Córdova demonstrates how Paul draws upon Platonic (immaterial πνεῦμα) and Stoic (material πνεῦμα) language that would have been familiar to his hearers in the early Christian communities to create a persuasive understanding of ethical performance and to show that the moral life of the believers springs from that πνεῦμα received from God. In his efforts to highlight πνεῦμα’s central role in his ethics, Paul moves beyond both traditions by describing the “Christification” of πνεῦμα not only in Stoic terms, but also in Middle Platonic categories of the first century CE.
