Il soggetto trattato in questo lavoro è uno di quelli al cui riguardo un uomo che si preoccupa della sua reputazione scientifica non è mai troppo circospetto. Non conosciamo infatti niente di più compromettente, e l’esempio degli oltraggi che hanno dovuto sopportare, in questi ultimi tempi i più eminenti studiosi d’Inghilterra e di Germania, che hanno osato esaminare da vicino la questione dello spiritismo e ripetere quello che hanno visto, dà senz’altro da riflettere ai più temerari. Prima di darsi allo studio sperimentale del sonnambulismo provocato, dell’ipnotismo, e della suggestione e di tutti quei fenomeni non bene definiti che si classificavano un tempo nella categoria dei fatti del magnetismo animale, gli studiosi e in particolare i medici, ci hanno pensato due volte. La ragione di questa eccessiva prudenza è facilmente intuibile: il problema « magnetismo » era stato fortemente squalificato e sminuito dai vari magnetizzatori, ciarlatani e saltimbanchi. I fenomeni dell’ipnotismo o magnetismo animale, per quanto facenti parte della forza nervosa, o se si preferisce, della materia nervosa attiva, ci sembra che differiscano completamente da quelli di cui parleremo in questa sede. Dopo il successo del Libro degli spiriti, pubblicato nel 1857, Allan Kardec giudicò opportuno continuare il discorso iniziato con quel testo con la pubblicazione di una rivista, che vide la luce agli inizi del 1858 sotto il nome di Revue Spirite. Kardec la diresse per undici anni, fino alla morte, facendone uno strumento che perfezionava e completava il sistema filosofico della dottrina spiritualista da lui elaborata. La scelta degli articoli e degli argomenti, l’impostazione di fondo e numerosi scritti originali e commenti si devono proprio al pensiero e alla penna di Kardec. Attingendo alla ricca miniera costituita dalle annate della Revue, è stato possibile riunire ora in un volume gli scritti più interessanti e originali, scelti e coordinati per argomento. Questo libro raccoglie casi, commenti e comunicazioni relativi a quei fenomeni che vengono comunemente definiti come “ossessioni” e “possessioni”, cercando di darne adeguate spiegazioni alla luce dello spiritismo e delle teorie propugnate e diffuse da Allan Kardec.
