Refuting the common perception that the American left has a religion problem, Vaneesa Cook highlights an important but overlooked intellectual and political tradition that she calls "spiritual socialism." Spiritual socialists emphasized the social side of socialism and believed the most basic expression of religious values—caring for the sick, tired, hungry, and exploited members of one's community—created a firm footing for society. Their unorthodox perspective on the spiritual and cultural meaning of socialist principles helped make leftist thought more palatable to Americans, who associated socialism with Soviet atheism and autocracy. In this way, spiritual socialism continually put pressure on liberals, conservatives, and Marxists to address the essential connection between morality and social justice. Cook tells her story through an eclectic group of activists whose lives and works span the twentieth century. Sherwood Eddy, A. J. Muste, Myles Horton, Dorothy Day, Henry Wallace, Pauli Murray, Staughton Lynd, and Martin Luther King, Jr. spoke and wrote publicly about the connection between religious values and socialism. Equality, cooperation, and peace, they argued, would not develop overnight, and a more humane society would never emerge through top-down legislation. Instead, they believed that the process of their vision of the world had to happen in homes, villages, and cities, from the bottom up. By insisting that people start treating each other better in everyday life, spiritual socialists transformed radical activism from projects of political policy-making to grass-roots organizing. For Cook, contemporary public figures such as Senator Bernie Sanders, Pope Francis, Reverend William Barber, and Cornel West are part of a long-standing tradition that exemplifies how non-Communist socialism has gained traction in American politics.

In sharp contrast to today's brand of "God wants you to be rich" spirituality, religious figures a century ago were asking the opposite question: Does Jesus frown on material wealth? One of the most outspoken voices so wondering was Bouck White, a Congregationalist minister in New York City, and in 1914, he was actually arrested and convicted on a trumped-up charge of disorderly conduct for continually posing this query to the privileged of Manhattan, which only turned him into a cause clbre among the city's newspaper editorialists and social activists-and the bane of the Church hierarchy and economic elite. Collected here, his communications to the outside world during his incarceration serve as impassioned calls for justice not only for himself but for the downtrodden in an era of economic upheaval-and today, White's words remind us of a time not so long ago when popular champions of the poor and working class dared to risk their own well-being in the name of a higher cause. In this dissertation, I argue that historians cannot escape the dominant "rise and fall" declension narratives of both the American left and American left-liberal religion without understanding the unique vision of spiritual socialists, who believed they could create a better world from the bottom-up by cultivating religious values in daily, local social relations. Spiritual socialists conceived of socialism as a decentralized, religious way of life, not as an economic system or political program for proletarian revolution. Consequently, they regarded political "failures" to achieve power or affect policy as temporary setbacks. They focused instead on the much longer struggle to build small, socialist communities that would prefigure the coming Kingdom of God on earth, an ideal, spiritualized state in which socialist values - equality, peace, and cooperation - become normative practice. The religious thought of Sherwood Eddy, A.J. Muste, Dorothy Day, Henry Wallace, and Staughton Lynd also helped shape left-of-center transnational perspectives in the mid-twentieth century. They regarded campaigns for political power during World War I, World War II, the Cold War, and within the Communist Internationals as a misapplication of moral values. Spiritual power and diplomacy, they believed, represented the best alternative to the war, violence, and imperialism that arrested the development of God's plan for all mankind. Historians cannot understand the social substance and enduring idealism of religious internationalists without understanding the unique vision of spiritual socialists. Neglecting the social substance of socialism has also caused historians to underestimate the lasting influence of leftists who have worked for long-term changes in small communities. On the social side of socialism, religion becomes much more important, since, as spiritual socialists insisted, only changes in the hearts and minds of men and women could create a new culture of social behavior. Concomitantly, they believed that only God and religious values possessed the power to initiate and sustain such changes. Spiritual socialism represents a continuous tradition of leftist religious activism throughout the mid-to-late twentieth century that challenges scholars to expand their treatment of religion beyond studies of conservative, fundamentalist, or liberal evangelical organizations
