Depuis bientôt une décennie, les actions se succèdent, se multiplient et s'intensifient pour que la pratique sportive s'offre à tous. Ce recours de plus en plus massif au sport concerne aussi le secteur de l'insertion destiné à ceux que l'on appelle "les jeunes en difficulté", qu'ils relèvent d'institutions privées ou de dispositifs publics. Si les projets d'insertion sont définis par les institutions, on peut se demander quelle peut être ou quelle doit être la place des jeunes eux-mêmes dans la mise en jeu de ces pratiques sportives? Au fond, le sport dont l'utilité sociale n'est pas niable, est-il pour autant l'ultime recours ou le dernier secret de l'intégration quand tout semble échouer ailleurs? Des chercheurs issus de divers horizons proposent quelques réponses à ces questions (et à d'autres) en mettant en perspective des travaux récents participant aussi bien de la recherche que d'une mobilisation sociale et locale.
