Although fire sprinklers have been in use for over 100 years there has been little progress toward developing analytical methods of calculating their effectiveness. This lack of progress is primarily due to absence of information about initial spray characteristics near sprinklers. In this study, experiments were conducted near a variety of sprinkler designs utilizing (1) a pulsed laser sheet and CCD camera and (2) phase Doppler interferometry.

This report represents a descriptive review of the state-of-the-art on spray nozzle characteristics, drop-size measurement, and drop-size distribution and spray pattern analysis. A discussion of significant information gaps is also included. A list of references supporting these findings has been prepared and appears as an appendix to this report. It is concluded that the evaluation of fire protection spray devices must be updated to include considerably more than the volume distribution of water at some standardized distance below the deflector of a sprinkler. Since both the fire environment and the spray structure are three dimensional by nature, and, as these opposing forces occur simultaneously in real fire situations, it is desirable to understand in greater detail the application of water to fire by fire protection spray devices.

A computer controlled video shadowgraph was used to collect data on the spray characteristics of a commercially available sprinkler head. A total of 15 tests were carried out that measured spray characteristics at different positions close to the sprinkler head. Tests were conducted using two different water flow rates, one and two liters per second. Droplet diameters were measured and analyzed to produce graphic presentations of normalized cumulative volume and cumulative number vs. droplet diameter data. In addition, a comparison was made between the droplet diameters measured using the video analyzer and droplet samples collected in a light oil and measured manually using a microscope. The data are also compared with results found in the literature. Data on more than 66,000 spray droplets were collected and used for analysis in the development of this report.
