Seine verschlungene, mithin verschlossen scheinende Lyrik, mit denen er es als einer der Wenigen verstand, das Grauen des Holocaust anzusprechen, gibt der literaturwissenschaftlichen Forschung bis heute Rätsel auf. Die augenscheinlichste und für die vorliegende Arbeit zentrale Besonderheit des Celanschen Schaffens, der sich Zeit seines Lebens von einzig einem Ereignis im Januar 1942, herschrieb, ist die Tatsache, dass er trotz der vielfach in der literarischen Öffentlichkeit bekundeten Unmöglichkeit, nach Auschwitz zurück zu einer lyrischen Sprache zurück zu finden, genau das tat: Celan fand durch die neu geschaffene Sprachidentität seiner Lyrik Worte für die grauenvolle Wirklichkeit, für das von Menschenhand begangene Verbrechen an der Menschlichkeit und verstand dabei seine Gedichte jedoch nie als Tatsachenbericht, sondern vielmehr als Daseinsentwürfe derer, die angesichts der Grauen von Auschwitz nach Antworten innerhalb finsteren Zeiten, in denen seine Lyrik entstand, suchten – ihn selbst miteingeschlossen: „Vielleicht darf man sagen, dass jedem Gedicht sein ‚20. Jänner‘ eingeschrieben bleibt? [...] Aber schreiben wir uns nicht alle von solchen Daten her? Und welchen Daten schreiben wir uns zu?“ Die vorliegende Arbeit versucht, sich einem bestimmten Gedicht Celans, dem ‚Psalm’, vor diesem Hintergrund zu nähern. Um eine Interpretation überhaupt möglich zu machen, soll zunächst die Frage nach der Möglichkeit einer Sprache nach Auschwitz und Celans Erwiderung in Form seiner ganz eigenen Dichtung hierbei im Vordergrund stehen. Eine eigene Dichtung – ein Ausdruck, der fast automatisch das Stichwort nach Hermetismus provoziert, das im Zusammenhang mit der Biographie des Dichters, dessen Überleben und zeitlebens damit verbundenes großes Schuldgefühl die Grundlage seines Schaffens bildete, im Laufe der Arbeit ebenfalls behandelt werden wird, bevor sich der letzte und größte Teil dem Versuch einer Interpretation des Gedichtes ‚Psalm’ widmet.
