Relationen mellem sprog, kultur og viden er kompleks, men den findes. I sprogundervisningen er der for eksempel fokus pa, hvordan ordenes betydning adskiller sig fra et sprog til et andet. Vi tager gerne vores sprog med os, hvis vi slar os ned i udlandet, og der udvikler sproget sig i en ny kultur.Mange er i dag ogsa optaget af, at sproglAering kan ske samtidig med, at man lAeser et helt andet fag - geografi, samfundsfag, matematik, erhverv eller billedkunst. Studerende pa de videregaende uddannelser lAeser ofte fagtekster pa fremmedsprog, men her bliver sproget tit blot mediet for indholdet, hvor man glemmer sprogets kulturlige og historiske forankring. Og det er vigtigt at fa med, at diskurser, verdensforstaelser og vidensformer varierer fra sprog til sprog. Race og etnicitet forstas eksempelvis forskelligt i de (tidligere) britiske og spanske kolonier.Sproget pavirker altsa den made, vi opnar viden om kulturer pa. Men hvad betyder det for indholdet, at det udtrykkes pa et bestemt sprog? Og hvilken rolle spiller sprogfagene i forhold til kulturforstaelsen?
