Excerpt from St. Kilda So much has already been written about St. Kilda thati suppose I should apologise for adding yet another book on the subject, but I believe a good many people take an interest in the little island, the most remote corner of the British Isles, and as I have had exceptional opportunities of study ing the people, and obtaining illustrations of the scenery and birds, I venture to hope that my book may not be de trap. Excerpt from Out of the World, or Life in St. Kilda It will be admitted that one may travel far and see nothing more worthy Of observation than this little island and its primitive community. In this belief I paid a visit to St Kilda in the Summer Of 1875, and remained for seven weeks there. I visited it again, for a purpose to be afterwards explained, in 1876, and resided for eight months. I shall now attempt to describe what I saw, in the hope that it may interest those who have no leisure, inclination, or Opportunity for seeing the place for themselves. Excerpt from Rambles in Skye: With Sketch of a Trip to St. Kilda Monday, 29t/z. - Left Strome by steamer Lochiel about 3 p.m., half-an-hour behind advertised time. A pretty large number of passengers had come from the south by rail and joined the steamer, the large majority being farmers, cattle/ dealers, drovers, &c., going to attend the Portree Cattle Market on the following day (tues, day, 3oth May.) Our first place of call was at Plockton, where a considerable number of people joined the steamer, coming out a good long way in boats - there being no pier for the steamer. We next passed on our left the picturesque looking little village of Kyle Akin, with its prominent white lighthouse Shining brightly in the rays of the descending sun. The village stands on the Skye side.of the narrow strait or sound that divides. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Father of St. Kilda: Twenty Years in Isolation in the Sub-Arctic Territory of the Hudson's Bay Company IT was said long ago, that of the making of books there is no end. I, too, wisely or unwisely, have made a book. In the fag-end of a weary century we have attained to the prosaic faculty of being able to measure sunshine, weigh winds, and analyse stars, yet the primitive instincts of humanity are still unconquered, still unconquerable. A sun worshipper by nature and early training, I have loved dearly a life in the open air. Is it then folly, ignorance, or presumption that tempts me to become an author? My audacity stares me in the face. Yet one must accomplish something, says Goethe, nay, fail in something, to learn to know one's own capacities and those of others. We discover an unsuspected vein in us, only in beginning to work it. And so work grows out of faith, and it takes both to make a man. It is by toil alone that we arrive at our true selves. Only by polishing do we reach the peculium of a diamond - its light-giving faculty; and only by the same process do we discover the hidden powers of a man, his peculiar office and function in the world, which none other can exactly fill.
