This fascinating historical study of a medieval English church and its community is based on original documents from the parish archives. Topics addressed include landownership, agriculture, religious practices, and social hierarchy. Excerpt from St. Mary's, Hurley, in the Middle Ages: Based on Hurley Charters and Deeds For many years past I have been collecting the materials out of which this memoir has been compiled. Our Rural Dean has more than once suggested that I should put them into print, and when, last autumn, the Dean and Chapter of Westminster placed a large number of Hurley Charters and Deeds at my disposal, on loan at the British Museum, I resolved to publish them in an epitomized form; and gradually this little work has grown. If a great book be a great evil, a small book has at least the advantage of being a lesser evil. This volume in no way pretends to be a complete history of the burial place of Edith, sister of King Edward the Confessor. It takes the form of a sketch which is mainly centred on the history of Hurley in the Middle Ages. It is well known that a book is always of more interest to the author than to his readers. In this instance, I shall more accurately describe myself as a compiler than as an originator. To the Dean and Chapter of Westminster and to the officials of the British Museum, my best thanks are due for their valuable co-operation. The Dependent Priories Of Medieval English Monasteries written by Martin Heale and has been published by Boydell & Brewer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2004 with Architecture categories.

"This study charts for the first time the history of the 140 or so daughter houses of English monasteries, which have always been overshadowed by the French cells in England, the so-called alien priories. The first part of the book examines the reasons for the foundation of these monasteries and the relations between dependent priories and their mother houses, bishops and patrons. The second part investigates everyday life in cells, the priories' interaction with their neighbours and their economic viability. The unusual pattern of dissolution of these houses is also revealed. Because of the tremendous bulk of material to survive for English dependencies, this is the most detailed account of a group of small monasteries yet written. Although daughter houses are in many ways unrepresentative of other lesser monasteries, their experience sheds a great deal of light on the world of the small religious house, and suggests that these shadowy institutions were far more central to medieval religion and society than has been appreciated."--BOOK JACKET

The importance of the themes of rulership and rebellion in the history of the Anglo-Norman world between 1066 and the early thirteenth century is incontrovertible. The power, government, and influence of kings, queens and other lords pervaded and dominated society and was frequently challenged and resisted. But while biographies of rulers, studies of the institutions and operation of central, local and seigniorial government, and works on particular political struggles abound, many major aspects of rulership and rebellion remain to be explored or further elucidated. This volume, written by leading scholars in the field and dedicated to the pioneering work of Professor Edmund King, will make an original, important and timely contribution to our knowledge and understanding of Anglo-Norman history.
