An experimental investigation is made of the stability of viscous jets of a non-Newtonian fluid consisting of solutions of CMC (Carboxymethyl Cellulose) in water. The Newtonian fluid properties of CMC solutions are correlated in terms of a relaxation time, which can be estimated theoretically, and two characteristics viscosities, all of which depend only on the additive concentration. The breakup distance for CMC solutions is compared to the known properties of Newtonian jets, as well as theoretical and experimental results for non-Newtonian fluids from other sources. (Author).

An experimental investigation of stability is made of laminar viscous jets of a Newtonian fluid. The breakup length is measured by electrical means as a function of fluid properties, together with jet exit velocity and diameter. Nozzles with orifice plate exits, as well as long, cylindrical pipes, were tested. The conditions for the maximum breakup distance were determined, as well as the functional form of the breakup curve before and after the peak. The results are discussed in comparison to the other known sources of data, as well as the theories which are applicable. (Author).

In this progress report the authors report on progress in making experimental measurements to describe the rheological properties of non-Newtonian fluids. Non-Newtonian liquids exhibit a non linear relationship between the shear stress and the shear rate. A typical time-dependent rheological phenomenon is thixotropy. Thixotropic fluids show a limited decrease in the shear viscosity of the fluid with time under a suddenly applied constant stress. Thixotropic fluids also show a hysteresis loop and a decaying stress on the shear stress-shear rate plot. Here the authors are using a power law model to describe the behavior of such non-Newtonian liquids.

A mathematical model for predicting the breakup length and resultant drop size for a liquid jet emanating from an orifice into a gaseous atmosphere is presented in this thesis. The non-Newtonian viscoelastic liquids are considered owing to their importance in a variety of engineering applications. The viscoelastic liquid rheology is characterized by the Jeffrey's equation. Results for a Newtonian jet are obtained by making the viscoelastic time constants zero in the model. Furthermore, when the liquid viscosity is neglected in the model, the behavior of an inviscid liquid jet can be predicted. The perturbation expansion technique is used to analyze the stability of the liquid jet by imposing a small disturbance on the jet surface and tracking the growth and development of the disturbance. In this temporal analysis, the jet is considered to disintegrate into droplets when the amplitude of the surface disturbance reaches the jet radius. The time taken for the surface deformation to evolve and break the jet, or the breakup time, and the breakup length are calculated. The model is validated by comparing numerical predictions with several theoretical analyses and experimental measurements available in the literature. A parametric study is carried out to investigate the effects of fluid properties (liquid viscosity, liquid elasticity, and time constant ratios), flow conditions (liquid and gas velocities), and disturbance characteristics (initial amplitude and wave number) on the breakup length and resultant drop size. Significant findings are that increase in gas velocity decreases the breakup length and increases the size of the secondary drops formed. Also, jets of higher viscosity liquids have longer breakup lengths. Increasing the liquid elasticity decreases the breakup length and aids in the breakup process. Higher initial disturbance amplitude results in shorter breakup length but the initial amplitude does not significantly affect the resulting drop size.

Two-fluid dynamics is a challenging subject rich in physics and prac tical applications. Many of the most interesting problems are tied to the loss of stability which is realized in preferential positioning and shaping of the interface, so that interfacial stability is a major player in this drama. Typically, solutions of equations governing the dynamics of two fluids are not uniquely determined by the boundary data and different configurations of flow are compatible with the same data. This is one reason why stability studies are important; we need to know which of the possible solutions are stable to predict what might be observed. When we started our studies in the early 1980's, it was not at all evident that stability theory could actu ally work in the hostile environment of pervasive nonuniqueness. We were pleasantly surprised, even astounded, by the extent to which it does work. There are many simple solutions, called basic flows, which are never stable, but we may always compute growth rates and determine the wavelength and frequency of the unstable mode which grows the fastest. This proce dure appears to work well even in deeply nonlinear regimes where linear theory is not strictly valid, just as Lord Rayleigh showed long ago in his calculation of the size of drops resulting from capillary-induced pinch-off of an inviscid jet.
