The domain of neuroscience has had one of the most explosive growths in recent decades: within this development there has been a remarkable and renewed interest in the study of the relations between behaviour and the central nervous system. Part of this new attention is connected with the contribution of new technologies (PET, fMRI) permitting more precise mapping of neural structures responsible for cognitive functions and the development of new theoretical models of mental activities. The diffusion of new pathologies (for example the pattern of cognitive impairment associated with AIDS) has further enlarged the field of clinical neuropsychology. Finally there has been an expanding clinical interest in the understanding and management of age-related cognitive changes. This volume is the translated and updated version of the second edition of Manuale di Neuropsicologia (Zanichelli, 1996), by the same authors, and it reflects the current status of the art. It is intended to blend clinical and theoretical aspects of neuropsychology. The first part discusses the instrumental and clinical methods of investigation in neuropsychology, together with their development. A long section is dedicated to the language and memory disorders. The impairment of non-verbal cognitve functions, such as the disorders of space orientation, of of visuo-perceptive abilities, and of the emotions and attention, are extensively discussed. The pattern of degenerative dementias is thorougly described, as e is thoroughly described, as well as a number of new topics, such as a neuropsychological approach to consciousness. Finally, perspectives for treatment of some cognitive disorders are outlined.

Phyllis Rackin offers a fresh approach to Shakespeare's English history plays, rereading them in the context of a world where rapid cultural change transformed historical consciousness and gave the study of history a new urgency. Rackin situates Shakespeare's English chronicles among multiple discourses, particularly the controversies surrounding the functions of poetry, theater, and history. She focuses on areas of contention in Renaissance historiography that are also areas of concern in recent criticism-historical authority and causation, the problems of anachronism and nostalgia, and the historical construction of class and gender. She analyzes the ways in which the perfoace of history in Shakespeare's theater participated--and its representation in subsequent criticism still participates--in the contests between opposed theories of history and between the different ideological interests and historiographic practices they authorize. Celebrating the heroic struggles of the past and recording the patriarchal genealogies of kings and nobles, Tudor historians provided an implicit rationale for the hierarchical order of their own time; but the new public theater where socially heterogeneous audiences came together to watch common players enact the roles of their social superiors was widely perceived as subverting that order. Examining such sociohistorical factors as the roles of women and common men and the conditions of theatrical performance, Rackin explores what happened when elite historical discourse was trans porteto the public commercial theater. She argues that Shakespeare's chronicles transformed univocal historical writing into polyphonic theatrical scripts that expressed the contradictions of Elizabethan culture.

The same child at different times, and different children in the same moment, use representation "models" that are globally identical but structurally differentiated. From the age of four we witness an important phase in social adaptation of children since they are particularly receptive and ready to record everything that surrounds them, in an interpretation that already shows some signs of critical appraisal. Through the observation child creates awareness of shapes, their idols and symbols, figuring the father, mother, other family members and friends, animals and objects that impress strongly her. But is often the representation she makes itself that prevails in her drawings. The graphic expression takes on greater intentionality. All impulses, reactions, emotions and thoughts are transmitted to drawings that the child performs, which become remarkably figurative. She repeatedly represents people, houses and roads, animals, trees, cars, stars, among other forms observed and internalized. This process stresses up till five years old. Around six years child begins to improve graphical representation, specifying the line and adjusting it better to the chosen theme. Early in the preschematic period child develops awareness of his body, which shall draw often differing parts of the same. It is the beginning of an organized mental process through new concepts and representative symbols. The design is now a form of communication, of significance. Only after four years the artistic events are no longer simple physical knowledge activities to be both social-affective relationship activities. For understanding children's graphical expression is necessary to know the formal elements that constitute it. The line may be considered the basic element of the graphical language, since which allows the hint of forms, shapes, volumes, textures, movements. According to the words of the Swiss painter Paul Klee, designing is "taking a line for a walk". The line is the same for all children, the tour is that it can be different. The differentiation in the representation of the human figure will have a double meaning: Vertical, since it corresponds to the natural development intention and representative capacity for each child, and the horizontal, in that each child uses its own process and therefore distinct.
