This outline of standards is designed for administrators and committees concerned with libraries for religious congregations. The standards were developed based on the understanding that the church or synagogue library is a special library that serves the institution in which it is housed and which is supplemental to other libraries in the area, providing materials related to the teachings and programs of its faith. Standards are presented as goals to work toward in organizing and developing congregational libraries. The standards begin by establishing the need for a policy statement and providing a sample statement. Other areas discussed include: (1) physical requirements; (2) administration and operation; (3) personnel qualifications and responsibilities; (4) finances; (5) selection of materials; (6) cataloging and classification; (7) public relations; and (8) a check list for long-range planning. An appendix contains sample policy statements, a sample materials selection policy, and sample by-laws for a library committee. (SLD)

This guide to subject headings for church or synagogue libraries begins by providing guidelines for the subject cataloging process. These guidelines are presented under seven headings: (1) Selecting the Subject Heading (by names of persons, religious congregations and orders, sects and denominations, places, holidays, and new subjects); (2) Specific Entry; (3) Subdivisions; (4) Cross References; (5) Subject Entry Cards; (6) Classification Numbers; and (7) Subject Authority File. Practical examples are provided which correspond to each of these headings. The subject heading list, which makes up the major part of the publication, includes classification numbers for each term that would most likely be found in a church or synagogue library. Suggestions for additional headings may be found in both the guidelines and in works listed in the bibliography. A list of some of the subject headings most used in collections of non-fiction children's books is also provided. A 9-item bibliography and a list of other CSLA (Church and Synagogue Library Association) publications are included. (MAB)

Designed as a simple how-to guide, this revised handbook presents guidelines for setting up a church or synagogue library or revitalizing an existing one. The first section, "Begin with a Purpose," advocates preparing a statement of purpose. The second step, "Be Prepared," discusses the importance of the planning process. Section 3, "Obtain Approval," suggests ways to make sure the congregation approves of the library and supports it. The fourth, "Organize a Library Committee," provides the procedures to establish a library committee. "Staff the Library" examines how to find people to manage the library, acquire and maintain its collection, and to operate its services. Step 6, "Survey Your Assets," suggests how to gather existing materials, sort and store them, and how to review the collection and user requirements. The seventh, "Establish Basic Policies," gives examples of library policies. Step 8, "Develop Action Plans," provides the steps of the planning process. The ninth section, "Carry Out the Plan," provides suggestions for implementing the plan. Step 10, "Provide for Continuity," recommends preparing annual reports and plans. The final section, "Stretch Your Horizons," examines outreach possibilities with the community, congregational libraries, and professional librarians. A planning worksheet is appended. (JLB)

The need for reference books, selection guidelines, issues about circulation, descriptions of various types of books, and ideas for promoting the use of these books in a congregational library are covered in this guide. The work opens with a discussion of what reference books are and broad guidelines for deciding which books should be in a congregational library. Guidelines for building the reference collection suggest ways to determine which books are currently owned, what is needed, what can be afforded, what will fit into the library, and how to plan for the future. The basics of learning to be a reference librarian are then outlined, including such areas as helping patrons to answer questions and helping them to learn. Promoting the reference section to the church or synagogue's education staff, youth groups, and other individuals is also described. Sample materials are provided, including a leaflet for a workshop on tools for Bible study; a bibliography of reference books; a quiz on library reference sources for patrons; and a sample lesson for Bible instructors. An annotated bibliography of reference books includes books about the Bible, as well as works on church history, comparative religions, denominations, music, and worship and preaching. An annotated list of reference books, prepared by Marcia Posner specifically for small, Jewish libraries, includes biographies, dictionaries, directories and almanacs, encyclopedias, history, the Holocaust, Israel and Zionism, Judaism, librarianship, quotations, and rabbinic literature. A list of publishers of religious reference books is also provided. (SD)
