Jana Kreckler untersucht realitätsbezogene Problemstellungen mit Geometriebezug aus dem Bereich der Optimierung mit dem Schwerpunkt der Standortplanung und bereitet sie für einen authentischen Mathematikunterricht auf. Sie entwickelte eine vierstündige Unterrichtseinheit, um die globale Modellierungskompetenz von Schülerinnen und Schülern in einem authentischen Mathematikunterricht zu fördern. In einer Studie mit 332 Schülerinnen und Schülern der 10. Jahrgangsstufe wurde diese Unterrichtseinheit evaluiert und bezüglich ihrer Effektivität ausgewertet. Die Untersuchungsergebnisse belegen einen signifikanten Anstieg der globalen Modellierungskompetenz, unabhängig von den Einflussfaktoren Geschlecht, Thematik und Zeugnisnote.

Corinna Hankeln untersucht, wie sich der Einsatz einer dynamischen Geometrie-Software auf den Kompetenzerwerb beim mathematischen Modellieren auswirkt. Sie stellt eine Interventionsstudie in 30 neunten Klassen vor, in der die Kompetenzentwicklung einer Gruppe, die durchgängig mit einer dynamischen Geometrie-Software arbeitet, mit einer mit Zirkel und Lineal lernenden Gruppe verglichen wird. Mithilfe der Item-Response-Theorie weist die Autorin nach, dass sich die Teilkompetenzen des Modellierens auch empirisch als unterschiedliche Leistungsdispositionen erfassen lassen. Die Befunde zeigen, dass der Einsatz eines digitalen Werkzeugs nicht unmittelbar zu einer veränderten Kompetenzentwicklung beider Gruppen führt. Differenziert nach Teilkompetenzen lassen sich aber unterschiedliche, die Kompetenzentwicklung beeinflussende Faktoren, wie etwa die Computer-Selbstwirksamkeitserwartung oder das Geschlecht der Versuchsperson, identifizieren.

This open access book is based on selected presentations from Topic Study Group 21: Mathematical Applications and Modelling in the Teaching and Learning of Mathematics at the 13th International Congress on Mathematical Education (ICME 13), held in Hamburg, Germany on July 24–31, 2016. It contributes to the theory, research and teaching practice concerning this key topic by taking into account the importance of relations between mathematics and the real world. Further, the book addresses the “balancing act” between developing students’ modelling skills on the one hand, and using modelling to help them learn mathematics on the other, which arises from the integration of modelling into classrooms. The contributions, prepared by authors from 9 countries, reflect the spectrum of international debates on the topic, and the examples presented span schooling from years 1 to 12, teacher education, and teaching modelling at the tertiary level. This volume documents on-going research and theorising in the sub-field of mathematics education devoted to the teaching and learning of mathematical modelling and applications. Mathematical modelling provides a way of conceiving and resolving problems in the life world of people whether these range from the everyday individual numeracy level to sophisticated new problems for society at large. Mathematical modelling and real world applications are considered as having potential for multi-disciplinary work that involves knowledge from a variety of communities of practice such as those in different workplaces (e.g., those of educators, designers, construction engineers, museum curators) and in different fields of academic endeavour (e.g., history, archaeology, mathematics, economics). From an educational perspective, researching the development of competency in real world modelling involves research situated in crossing the boundaries between being a student engaged in modelling or mathematical application to real word tasks in the classroom, being a teacher of mathematical modelling (in or outside the classroom or bridging both), and being a modeller of the world outside the classroom. This is the focus of many of the authors of the chapters in this book. All authors of this volume are members of the International Community of Teachers of Mathematical Modelling (ICTMA), the peak research body into researching the teaching and learning of mathematical modelling at all levels of education from the early years to tertiary education as well as in the workplace.

This survey provides an overview of the German discussion on modelling and applications in schools. It considers the development from the beginning of the 20th century to the present, and discusses the term “mathematical model” as well as different representations of the modelling process as modelling cycles. Different trends in the historical and current debate on applications and modelling can be differentiated as perspectives of modelling. Modelling is now one of the six general mathematical competencies defined in the educational standards for mathematics introduced in Germany in 2003, and there have been several initiatives to implement modelling in schools, as well as a whole range of empirical research projects focusing on teachers or students in modelling processes. As a special kind for implementing modelling into school, modelling weeks and days carried out by various German universities have been established.

In ihrer Interventionsstudie vergleicht sie zwei Versuchsgruppen in 29 neunten Klassen des Gymnasiums, die während einer Unterrichtseinheit jeweils mit bzw. ohne Strategieinstrument an Modellierungsaufgaben arbeiten. Auf Grundlage der Item-Response-Theorie stellt die Autorin Teilkompetenzen des Modellierens als getrennt zu erfassende Kompetenzdimensionen heraus. Die Ergebnisse zur Kompetenzentwicklung zeigen ein differenziertes Bild für die Teilkompetenzen: Der Einsatz eines Lösungsplans führt nicht direkt zu einem höheren Kompetenzerwerb, jedoch wird eine Tendenz für eine stärkere langfristige Kompetenzentwicklung deutlich.
