This study investigates the impact of culture on the transformation of the Russian Acting System into the American Method. Cultural influences will be determined by analyzing the origins, theoretical principles, and textual discourse of three pedagological texts, one representing the Russian view, one a more Western-influenced view, and the last the fully developed American Method. This study takes into account not only the differences in the cultural, social, and economic determinates within each discourse, as seen through the lens of Pierre Bourdieu's theories in The Field of Cultural Production, but also the implications of a particular discourse's form (genre), cultural examples (frame), and depictions (stories) in relation to possible authorial intent. This study also incorporates National Personality studies in order to discover the cultural differences between Russians and Americans. Three acting pedagogies form the crux of the investigation: Konstantin Stanislavsky's An Actor Prepares, Richard Boleslavsky's Acting: The First Six Lessons, and Lee Strasberg's A Dream of Passion . This study argues that the genres or forms (novel for An Actor Prepares, therapeutic discourse for Acting: The First Six Lessons, and autobiography for A Dream of Passion) chosen to transmit these acting techniques reflect cultural influences. In addition, each form represents a type of communicative practice with inherent strengths and weaknesses that influence the pedagogical interpretation. As the accretion of information builds in the discussion, a clearer and more multi-dimensional view forms, showing how and why a Russian process of acting changed to become a characteristically American process, not only in practice but also in theory. Through the use of culturally analytic methods, this study detects how personality differences between Russians and Americans show significant parallels to the contrasts between the System as it existed in Russia and the System as it became when translated into the Method. For example, the cultural studies detect how the Russian personality concentrates on the situation rather than on a search for its solution. Americans, on the other hand, tend to focus on the solution, thereby often failing to notice the specifics of the situation. Therefore, Stanislavsky's reliance on the "magic if" reflects the Russian's affinity with the situation, for only through a deep understanding of the situation can an actor concentrate totally on the action of the piece. On the other end of the spectrum, Strasberg's reliance on affective memory solves an actor's problem by identifying the emotion necessary for a character's action within a scene. Affective memory is solution-based and consequently favors the actor over the character. This study can serve as a tool in answering questions such as: Should teachers who use An Actor Prepares as a guide for American acting have an understanding of the cultural and social underpinnings that support and lead the lessons? Does adding a cultural component not only train actors more specifically, but also produce more conscientious and aware actors with flexible strategies that allow the matching of acting strategies to cultural demands? Overall, this analysis breaks ground toward the study of cultural awareness as a means of better understanding pedagogic theory, theatrical or otherwise.
