The History Of Islam In Africa written by Nehemia Levtzion and has been published by Ohio University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2000-03-31 with Religion categories.

The history of the Islamic faith on the continent of Africa spans fourteen centuries. For the first time in a single volume, The History of Islam in Africa presents a detailed historic mapping of the cultural, political, geographic, and religious past of this significant presence on a continent-wide scale. Bringing together two dozen leading scholars, this comprehensive work treats the historical development of the religion in each major region and examines its effects. Without assuming prior knowledge of the subject on the part of its readers, The History of Islam in Africa is broken down into discrete areas, each devoted to a particular place or theme and each written by experts in that particular arena. The introductory chapters examine the principal “gateways” from abroad through which Islam traditionally has influenced Africans. The following two parts present overviews of Islamic history in West Africa and the Sudanic zone, and in subequatorial Africa. In the final section, the authors discuss important themes that have had an impact on Muslim communities in Africa. Designed as both a reference and a text, The History of Islam in Africa will be an essential tool for libraries, scholars, and students of this growing field. Contributors: Edward A. Alpers, René A. Bravmann, Abdin Chande, Eric Charry, Allan Christelow, Roberta Ann Dunbar, Kenneth W. Harrow, Lansiné Kaba, Lidwien Kapteijns, Nehemia Levtzion, William F. S. Miles, David Owusu-Ansah, M. N. This volume addresses economic change, regional politics and Islamisation in Kordofan, a large province in the Sudan. Kordofan's history is characterised by resistance and adaptation to expanding states and market forces causing both sectoral transformation and stagnation. The contributions in different ways examine the interplay between local and invading institutions, and include studies of Kordofan as a terra media between Darfur and Sinnar, international trade in the nineteenth century, the Mahdist revolt, the Anglo-Egyptian Condominium (with particular reference to land tenure and tribal identity), Kordofan in Sudanese nationalist poetry, local politics in the Nuba Mountains and the conflict between religious orthodoxy and local practice. The book will be of interest to scholars of Africa and Islam because of its novel focus on regional institutions and their relation to the state structures. This edited volume explores the history, social structure and economy of Kordofan in the Sudan. Representing several academic disciplines, each chapter is concerned with the long-term incorporation - through invasions - of the region into wider socio-political and economic structures.

Islam In Nineteenth Century Wallo Ethiopia written by Hussein Ahmed and has been published by BRILL this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-10-01 with Social Science categories.

While presenting an historical account of the internal dynamics of Islam in Wallo, Ethiopia, with particular emphasis on the modes of its introduction and dissemination, and on its relationship with the Ethiopian state and regional power structure, this book describes the background to, and manifestations of, the revival and consolidation of Islam in the region in the nineteenth century by assessing the role of Muslim scholars, traders and chiefs in that process. It also traces the origin of the tradition of Islamic renewal and reform, and analyzes the response of Wallo Muslim religious intellectuals to the attempt of the Ethiopian Christian monarchs of the period to bring about the political unification of the kingdom by imposing a policy of religious coercion on the Muslims of Wallo. Based largely on hitherto-untapped oral and written indigenous sources, and supplemented by external archival and documentary evidence, the study is aimed at redressing the historiographical and interpretive imbalance embedded in the scholarly, institutional and popular perceptions on Islam in Ethiopia.
