The Nb program is nearing completion of laboratory tory rolling studiory materials, *Heat resistant alloys, *Sheets, Niobium alloys, Molybdenum alloys, Tantalum alloys, Tungsten alloys, Titanium alloys, Zirconium alloys, Tungsten, Powder metallurgy, Electric arcs, Manufacturing methods, Mechanical proper ies, Forging, Heat treatment, Melting, Extrusion, Deformation, Hardness, Rolling mills, Processing. Identifiers: Floturning. The Nb program is nearing completion of laboratory tory rolling studies, and a single composition for larger scale rolling studies will be selected in the near future. In the Mo program, it has been shown that true hot forging of billets to sheet bar results in higher recrystallization temperatures of TZM and Mo-0.5Ti sheet than are obtained when normal forging temperatures are used. The Ta program is in the early stages of ingot production and primary breakdown fabrication of the Ta-30Nb-7.5V alloy. Three methods of fabricating W sheet are being investigated: rolling of powder-metallurgy billets, fabrication of arc-melted ingots, and floturning of cylindrical blanks. Properties obtained on both powdermetallurgy and arc-melted tungsten sheet compare very favorably. Evaluation of the formability of Mo-alloy sheet has been delayed until sheet is available from the production program. (Author).

A summary is presented of the status of the Department of Defense Refractory Metals SheetRolling Program to accelerate the development of production techniques for high-quality, consistent sheet products from the refractory metals (Nb, Mo, Ta, and W) and their alloys. The program includes: (1) development of sheet production techniques, (2) establishment of minimum data re uired to evaluate mill production, (3) evaluation of fabrication characteristics of the sheet produced, and (4) establishment of design data. Contracts were awarded for the development of sheet production techniques for all four refractory metals. One contract was awarded for the evaluation of Mo alloy sheet fabrication characteristics. This report is the third of a series which will periodically summarize the status of the various contracts involved in the Department of Defense Refractory Metals Sheet Rolling Program. Under this program, selected candidate materials are being carried through one or more of the following consecutive phases: Phase I, development of a sheet-production practice; Phase II, establishment of minimum design data; and Phase III, evaluation of sheetfabrication characteristics. To the present time, 13 contracts have been funded or planned in support of the Phase I, II, and III activities. This report summarizes the status of each of these individual contracts as of November 1, 1964. The first section describes the overall program of the Department of Defense Refractory Metals Sheet Rolling Program. Following, in the order of their discussions, are sections dealing with fabricable molybdenum alloys, unalloyed tungsten, columbium alloys, and tantalum alloys. (Author).

Vacuum Degassing In The Production Of Premium Quality Steels written by P. J. O'Reilly and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1964 with Alloys categories.

This report gives the experiences of several steel producers and consumers with vacuum degassing as a melting practice in the manufacture of high-strength steels for critical applications. The parameters involved in determining the effects of melting practice on mechanical properties are outlined. Pertinent melting processes are described and evaluated qualitatively. In presenting the data, vacuum degassing is compared with other melting practices such as conventional air melting and consumable-electrode vacuum-arc remelting (CEVAR). Generally, there is a trend indicating that vacuum degassing is being used in some production applications instead of air-melted or CEVAR material. In terms of higher and more uniform transverse tensile properties and impact strength, longer fatigue life, and improved cleanliness, the CEVAR alloys were the best. Vacuum degassing by any of the various methods resulted in an improvement in properties of air-melted alloys. In some instances it appeared that the quality of CEVAR alloys could be approached when stream degassing or D-H (Dortmund-Horder) treatment was applied to air melts. Recommendations are given for additional investigations on the effects of melting practice on mechanical properties of premium-quality steels. (Author).

Tungsten Research And Development Review written by J. L. Ratliff and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1963 with Research and development projects categories.

Government-sponsored tungsten research and development efforts encompass a broad rage of technological activities. Typifying the extreme limits of efforts since January, 1960, studies have ranged from preparation of unalloyed metal to development of high-integrity fabricated shapes of tungsten-base materials. Nine major areas outline the broad over-all effort, and each is summarized within this report by brief technical discussions of 104 separate studies on 79 research programs. Included are preparation of metal, consolidation, primary and secondary working, joining, fabrication and performance of rocket nozzles, oxidation and other high-temperature reactions, protective coatings, properties, and physical metallurgy.
