The year of 1968 was a pivotal year in a period of great change and, with the march of so-called "progress" that included man being a matter of months away from walking on the moon, the time was up for steam. The first week of August was to see the closure of the final three depots - effectively drawing to a conclusion the century and a half of loyal service provided by a form of transport to which the wealth of our nation owed so much. The steam era ended so poignantly on the 4th of August, a day on which innumerable steam railwaymen, most of whom had dedicated their entire lives to the railways, were declared redundant. This fascinating book chronicling the last months of steam on the British Railways main line is a tribute to those final men and machines. Years of painstaking research by Alan Castle, who viewed the proceedings at first hand 40 years ago, and interviews with drivers, firemen and engine shed staff, have resulted in this authoritative and definitive account of the year in which the final whistle sounded on a steam era dating back more than 150 years.

At the beginning of 1967 the writing was clearly on the wall for Southern Steam, with the intention of eliminating it altogether on the 18th June of that year. From the 2nd January, with the Brush type 4s working many main line trains including the Bournemouth Belle, steam was reduced to thirteen departures from Waterloo, three of which were in the early hours. From the 3rd April this was further reduced to just five day and three night time departures. However, by this time it was realized that due to late delivery of the new electric stock, the deadline for the demise of steam was put back to the 9th July and an interim timetable introduced from 12th June.Using information gathered from many sources, Countdown to Extinction chronicles the events of 1967, with the final five weeks in detail, including events that formed the background to the time.

The county of Lancashire was well served with railway lines connecting the big cities, heavy industry and the rural towns. As the home of many of BR's last operational steam locomotives, it attracted a lot of attention from enthusiasts as the steam era drew to a close. But this book, in full colour, covers much more than just the final fling of steam and has superb pictures taken from the late 1950s to 1968 throughout the county. These are accompanied by informative captions from the author, who hails from Manchester. A number of outstanding photographers have contributed to the book and many pictures are published for the first time, including some rarely seen locations and stations.
