Theodor Fontane (1819-98), widely regarded as Germany's most significant novelist between Goethe and Thomas Mann, pioneered the German novel of manners and upper-class society, following a trend in European fiction of the period. The Stechlin is Fontane's last book and his political testament. Like Effi Briest, his great work on the place of women in Bismarck's empire, it is set at the apex of the Wilhelmine era, both in Berlin and on the estate of a Prussian Junker on the shores of Lake Stechlin. It is a significant historical and cultural document, probably the finest chronicle of the life style of the German upper classes in the late nineteenth century; Fontane portrays the best in the life and ways of the passing Prussian aristocrats, while describing his hopes for the future of Germany and its nobility, which were never to be fully realized. Although this novel has been translated into many languages, it has never before been available in English; this edition thus fills an important gap in the significant works of European literature accessible to English readers.

This current volume in the Advances in Limnology addresses new limnological studies carried out in the Lake Stechlin area and summarizes and integrates the present state of approach in various fields to understand a temperate oligotrophic lowland lake. It provides unpublished recent results from different disciplines, e.g. bacteriology, fish ecology and fishery, gas cycling, geochemistry, hydrology, limnology, phycology, paleolimnology, sedimentology, which are carefully related to previous knowledge on Lake Stechlin and other lake ecosystems. The limnological studies on Lake Stechlin, which now span a period of more than four decades, covered a large range of subjects, focused on producing a better understanding of the structure and function of an oligotrophic lowland lake in the temperate climate zone. Throughout this period, a general focus was on understanding the importance of catchment area influences, hydrometeorological conditions and nutrient loading on biocoenoses, bacterial, primary and secondary production and the water and sediment composition as well as heat, matter and water balances. The relationships between different reasonably reproduced environmental conditions and subsequent changes in lake limnology and reactions in the lake were investigated on a quasi experimental basis. Lake Stechlin has been studied extensively since 1958 by different research institutions within the bounds of special scientific collaboration programs and projects. In addition to these programs, scientists from different countries participated in Lake Stechlin research. This volume is intended to stimulate new approaches and potentials for integrative studies on lake ecology and the sustainable management of lake systems.

Im Zuge dieser Hausarbeit werden die folgenden Fragen beantwortet: 1.) Wie wird die Auseinandersetzung zwischen "Altem" und "Neuem" in politischer Hinsicht im "Stechlin" dargstellt? 2.) Welcher Bedeutung kommt dabei auf symbolischer Ebene dem Stechlinsee zu? 3.) Inwiefern ist der "Stechlin" Fontanes als "politischer Roman" einzuschätzen? Im ersten Teil dieser Hausarbeit wird zuerst dargestellt, in welcher Weise das Politische überhaupt Thema des Romans ist, nämlich unter Bezugnahme auf die Wahl in Theinsberg-Wutz sowie die Rolle der Sozialdemokratie und des Vierten Standes im "Stechlin." Im dritten Abschnitt wird die These vertreten, dass der Stechlin ein politischer Roman ist. Abschließend wird im vierten Teil der Arbeit Conrad Wandreys Behauptung dargestellt, dass der Stechlin kein politischer Roman sei und einer kritischen Betrachtung unterzogen.
