Dieser Roman wurde oft als Max Brods »Zauberberg" bezeichnet, spielt er doch 1914, in den letzten Monaten vor Ausbruch des Ersten Weltkriegs, welcher das alte Europa zum Einsturz brachte. Aber nicht ein entlegenes Sanatorium, sondern die kleine deutsche Gemeinde in Prag ist bei Brod das Modell der bürgerlichen Gesellschaft vor dem Kriege. Im Mittelpunkt steht der Gymnasiast Stefan Rott, ein junger Mann aus guter Familie, der sich die Welt zu erklären sucht und seine erste Liebe erlebt - er verehrt Phyllis, die Mutter eines Klassenkameraden und wird schließlich sogar von ihr erhört. Hinter der gutbürgerlichen Fassade aber verbergen sich Lüge und Korruption, wie Stefan nach und nach erkennen muss. Die schöne Phyllis ist dem reichen Advokaten Urban zugetan, und Geld spielt dabei durchaus eine Rolle. Mit dem Attentat von Sarajevo stürzt auch diese kleine Prager deutsche Welt in den Abgrund: Frau Phyllis schießt auf ihren Ehemann, der Anarchist Dlouhy, Stefans Klassenkamerad, wird zum Tode verurteilt. Private und politische Entwicklung sind am selben Punkt angelangt: es wird nicht mehr geredet, es wird geschossen.

Plato's earthly life ended in the year 347 B. C. At the same time, however, began his posthumous life - a life of great influence and fame leaving its mark on aU eras of the history of European learning -lasting until present times. Plato's philosophy has taken root earlier or later in innumerable souls of others, it has matured and given birth to new ideas whose proliferation further dissemi nated the vital force of the original thoughts. It happened sometimes, of course, that by various interpretations different and sometimes altogether contradictory thoughts were deduced from one and the same Platonic doctrine: this possibility is also characteristic of Plato's genius. Even though in the history of Platonism there were times less active and creative, the continuity of its tradition has never been completely interrupted and where there was no growth and progress, at least that what had been once accepted has been kept alive. When enquiring into Plato's influence on the development of learning, we shall above all consider the individual approach of various personalities to Plato's philosophy, personal Platonism, which at its best concerns itself with the literary heritage of Plato and though accessible was not always much sought for.

Diese Studie analysiert den Werdegang Max Brods (1884‒1968) während der ersten Jahrzehnte des 20. Jahrhunderts im kulturellen und politischen Prager Kontext und vor dem Hintergrund der für diesen Kontext charakteristischen Identitätsprobleme. Brod versucht zunächst, das Identitätsproblem durch eine vielfältige Produktion, in der sich der Wunsch ausdrückt, einer literarischen Bewegung anzugehören und sich seiner Identität als Schriftsteller zu versichern, sowie durch eine „indifferentistische“ Lebensphilosophie zu lösen. Als sich dieser Versuch als erfolglos erweist, entwickelt er eine persönliche Auffassung vom Judentum und von der sozialen Funktion der Juden als Vermittler. Dies bildet fortan die Grundlage seiner Identität und führt ihn dazu, eines der führenden Mitglieder des tschechoslowakischen Zionismus zu werden und eine aktive Rolle im politischen Leben der ersten Tschechoslowakischen Republik Masaryks auszufüllen, um die Anerkennung der jüdischen Nationalität zu erzwingen. Brods Identität als „jüdischer Dichter deutscher Zunge“ mündet außerdem in eine kulturelle Vermittlertätigkeit zugunsten der Mitglieder des Prager Kreises (vor allem Werfels, Kafkas, Baums und Kischs) und tschechischer Künstler, vor allem Leoš Janáč eks. Allerdings wird sie durch das Aufkommen des Nationalsozialismus grundlegend in Frage gestellt.

Deutschsprachige Literatur jüdischer Autor*innen in Palästina/Israel galt lange als Schwanengesang der ‚deutsch-jüdischen Symbiose‘. Dieses Buch nimmt eine neue Perspektive ein, sieht sie als Teil des „Jewish literary complex“ (Dan Miron) und fragt nach ihrer Beziehung zum hebräischen Literaturbetrieb. Basierend auf umfangreichen Archivrecherchen sucht die Studie drei deutsch-hebräische Konstellationen auf: in der Anthologie, in der Übersetzung und in der variantenreichen Erzählung der Einwanderung. Die untersuchten Texte (u.a. von Max Brod, M. Y. Ben-Gavriêl, Josef Kastein, Baruch Kurzweil und Amos Oz) erweisen sich dabei als kritische Auseinandersetzung mit dem „zionistischen Masternarrativ“ (Gershon Shaked) von der sozialen und kulturellen Erlösung des jüdischen Volkes im Gelobten Land.
