The main idea behind 'STEIDL WERK N°23' was to create a paper object never seen before. A joint project, it stems from the exclusive collaboration between Theseus Chan s WERK Magazine and Steidl Publishers for this particular issue of 'WERK. Chan s and Steidl s common interest in the analogue, in art and books, and their addictive fascination with the smell of inks and the texture of paper combines in their shared philosophy of subverting technology by creating work that has a strong human imprint. Accordingly, this magazine issue features a young Japanese artist, Masaho Anotani, whose complex collage-like drawings and sometimes surreal, sometimes disturbing compositions are made almost entirely by hand.0The design was inspired by a tightly taped, neatly formed package sent to the magazine by Anotani containing his printouts an idea that found its way into the book itself which comes as an entirely sealed entity. The title Deformed is part of the idea to create a misshapen book that evolves along the process of coming into existence. Building on the concept of clashing, of creating and destructing the final product, something new a chaotic bricolage of printed junk is born.

Ruby Neri embraces a broad spectrum of figuration, drawing upon idiosyncratic 20th century West Coast traditions as well as a global catalogue of art historical and anthropological modes. Over the last two decades she has moved fluidly from one material to another¿including ceramic, plaster, metal, and paint¿to generate highly personal works of emotional immediacy. Ceramic objects and vessels have played an increasingly central role, and she has recently begun to experiment with the material in new ways: increasing the scale of the objects, painting more complex compositions on their surfaces, and more intricately weaving together the pictorial and sculptural aspects of each work. These advances have allowed her to bring new perspectives to the expressively rendered human figures that are her most frequent subjects. With exaggerated anatomical features and facial expressions that merge ecstasy and hysteria, Neri¿s recent objects evoke an intensity paralleled in her direct approach to her materials. This catalogue, the first publication dedicated solely to her work, documents the solo exhibition ¿Slaves and Humans¿, on view at David Kordansky Gallery in Los Angeles from July 23 until August 27, 2016. Featuring a specially commissioned essay that considers Neri against the historical backdrop of the Bay Area Figurative Movement and situates her among a group of contemporary artists making work that focuses on the human form, this book, designed by Purtill Family Business, provides a richly illustrated and in-depth look at a groundbreaking show of new ceramic sculptures. In addition to David Kordansky Gallery, Neri has been the subject of solo and two-person exhibitions at the Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive; Los Angeles Museum of Art; and Gallery Paule Anglim, San Francisco. Recent group exhibitions include shows at The Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum, Ridgefield, Connecticut; Everson Museum of Art, Syracuse, New York; Lever House, New York; Rubell Family Collection, Miami; Armory Center for the Arts, Pasadena, California; and High Line Art, New York. Neri lives and works in Los Angeles. Essay by Jenelle Porter.

The Museum of Contemporary Art Australia is pleased to present the first major survey exhibition in the Southern hemisphere by internationally renowned artist and Turner Prize recipient, Grayson Perry, as part of the Sydney International Art Series. It introduces the full spectrum of his practice from the early 1980s to the present, including new work. Grayson Perry is one of the best known British artists of his generation, acclaimed for his ceramics, sculptures, drawings, prints and tapestries. With a keen eye for detail and a love of the popular and vernacular, Perry infuses his artworks with a sly humour and reflection on society past and present. The artist's highly decorated pots in particular reveal a panoply of imagery ranging from the highly personal to the political, their subjects including his own family, the art world, Biblical stories, the royal family, and images of warfare and sexual fantasy. Perry's transvestism and feminine alter ego 'Claire' emerges through his practice as a recurring visual motif. A contemporary of the YBA (Young British Artists) generation, he has forged a distinctive career that sits apart from the cooler theoretical approach of some of his peers, favouring a more flamboyant, accessible aesthetic that blurs the division of high art and popular culture.

Unseen images and documents from the ultimate Bond film Perhaps theclassic James Bond film, Goldfinger(1964) undoubtedly marked the beginning of 1960s Bondmania. Incorporating much unpublished material, including photographs and the original typed screenplay, The Goldfinger Filesis an illustrated history of the film's iconic scenes shot in Switzerland's Urseren Valley, crowned by the car chase with Bond's gadget-laden Aston Martin. To maximize publicity for the film, its makers took the unorthodox step of inviting journalists and photographers onto the set, resulting in a wealth of photos, including those by Hans Gerber, Josef Ritler and Erich Kocian. These give us an insider's view of the famous sequence--Goldfinger's Rolls-Royce on the dusty mountain road, Tilly Masterson's failed assassination attempt on him, the chase between her Mustang and Bond's Aston Martin and finally Goldfinger's smelting factory. Dozens of private pictures revealing candid, behind-the-scenes moments complete this documentary flipbook of golden-age James Bond culture.

An almanac to the world of Gilles Peress' Whatever You Say, Say Nothing, delineating the decades of conflict in Northern Ireland In Annals of the North, New York-based photographer Gilles Peress (born 1946) and writer and lawyer Chris Klatell combine essays, stories, photographs, documents and testimonies to open up for the reader the complicated and contradictory storylines that emerged from the conflict in the North of Ireland. Weighed down by 800 years of colonization but only the size of Connecticut (with half its population), Northern Ireland provides a remarkably intimate stage set. Interweaving text and image, Annals of the Northexamines the multifaceted struggle between Irish Republicans and Nationalists, Protestant Unionists and Loyalists, and the imperial British, to explore broader themes of empire, retribution and betrayal, as well as the tense dialectic between the ordinary demands of everyday life and periodic explosions of violence. The book is at once wide-ranging yet deeply personal and political, alternately dense and humorous, legal and literary.
